Explorer vs. GP3500

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum but have been around lurking quite a while now. I am very interested in getting an EXII since I live in a rather "colonial" part of New England and only hunt for older coins...mostly in farm fields and woods and the occasional old cellar hole. Only been doing it for about a year with a Tesoro Lobo LST I bought for nugget shooting but has worked well. Anyway, I just read another article by Steve Hershbach reviewing the GP3500 as a "coinshooter" even though it was developed as a nugget hunter. To make a long story short...he thinks that the 3500 would be the ultimate way to go with regard to overall depth for older coins and would beat any VLF on the market today. Since it is a pulse machine, the discrimination is poor but he makes a point on how to easily discriminate between high and low conductive materials.

Now that I'm thoroughly confused....I have a nephew up in Anchorage that I will visit quite often...nuggets anyone? What machine should I get? What machine will be the ultimate on deep targets? I know I will have a hard time with the 3500 around old cellar holes and camps with trash so I'm still leaning toward the EXII.

Thanks

Hi, bluefin, and welcome. I can't tell you anything about the 3500 as I've never even seen one but I've been using the EXII for a couple of years and it's the best machine I've ever used and I've been doing this for 28 years. If you go with this one I would suggest the standard coil for large, fairly clean areas and a small coil for those trashy sites. Sorry I can't help you with the decision since I don't know the 3500 but if you do go with the Minelab I certainly don't think you'll regret it. Best of luck.

Hi Bluefin and just get both models and that way you will be covered for sure. If I knew I could go to gold nugget country on a fairly regular basis I would at least have a 2200 and the Explorer II. I wish you the best in your decision Bluefin. CU later and God Bless.
