explorer vs explorer xs

what is the difference between an old explorer and an explorer xs? thanks.

There never was one just called Explorer, at least not by Minelab. They're the Explorer S & the Explorer XS. The XS has many more features & is the one almost all of the posters are using. There was a problem with cracking plastic on the earlier Explorer XS models, they changed to better plastic March 2001 but I can't give a serial number or whatever to help determine if a unit has the improved plastic. I read several people say when their plastic cracked that Minelab fixed it for free. I wouldn't be so sure if they would fix it for free though if a person wasn't the original owner. yrs old, finally just recently noticed the "cracks" you hear about.I have been swinging a WOT for a few months, and the shaft kept sliding out. The ears that hold the lock lever pin, cracked.I don't think the extra weight of the WOT helped either. I called Minelab for info, where to send the unit/and $$ ??. Dick (MINELAB) informed me the housing would be warranty, before i could even ask the question! Made my day! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Patiently waiting its return. At least i can still hunt with my Excaliber! If any one is tracking serial #s on cracking, believe mine was #000179,(earlier unit)

My Explorer is pre 2001.
Should I send mine in during the Winter months to get it changed BEFORE something bad happens? Or do they only fix them WHEN they go bad?
I just don't want to be stranded during next Spring and Summer.

I sent my Explorer in for repair and the only way to not be stranded was to get another explorer. Thats what I did. Now my back-up is as good as my main machine.
