Explorer turning on itself

Anyone ever had their Explorer turn on itself, I dont know what it is, but every now and then it just turns on by itself, I now store it with the batteries out.. ill ring Minelab and ask them also i think

Hi Pete,
Are you saying that the detector switches ON by itself.
If it does then okay, try your Alkiline battery pack and if it still turns itself on , then send it right back to Minelab for hopefully warranty repair. They are veru prompt and should only take a couple of days if you are sending it from within Australia.

Never heard of that before, sounds like a warranty prob, then again I always take the NiMH battery out & leave on charge untill I think to turn it off

I wonder about that based on a single incident. One time I went detecting down the street at one of my local spots. Upon arriving, I found out my battery was dead. Based on my last usage just several days earlier, I should have had around 6 hours of charge remaining. The only explanation was that the detector had somehow turned itself on and the battery discharged. Since that incident, I check my battery before leaving the house and keep the alkaline battery pack in the detector bag.

Pete,
I had one here that turned itself off and you would have to turn it back on and even at times the battery would show good one minnute on the battery gauge and the next low. The battery had a bad conection in it and caused it to turn off and with the new curcuity in many electonic it can also cause a item to turn on also.
What Hardnose and Rick,N. Mich are saying may be what you need to do. Try a differnt battery, your alkiline pack will work nice that you know is good and see if it will do it, if it still turn on by itself then it will have to go in for repair.
Hope that will take care of the problem, if it does you just have to send in the battery for warrenty if it is still in warrenty. If it isnt the cost of a new one isnt too bad.
Rick

I think Rick and the others are right, its probably being cause by a bad battery connection. look down the battery compartment with a flashlight and make sure your connection springs are straight and not pushed to the side. Also check the end of you battery to see if the terminalys are tarnished or dirty.. when you put the battery pack in be sure it clicks in place, pushing the locking tab in place if neccessary. I know that I was having a problem with turning mine on and had to reseat it a few times before it would come on, perhaps on yours the connection is surging when it makes intermittantly and turning the detector on.. I clean off the nimh pack battery terminals every time before I replace it now as dirt does get onto my spare pack while detecting.. the only time mine ever turned on by itself is one time I got caught in a downpour and it got wet, I turned it off and when I got home it was back on, the conductivity of the water must have made the switch enough for it to think it was told to turn on <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Before I sent it in for the cover replacement I looked inside and saw the spring had been bent to the side not allowing for a good connection, made not of it on the return form and they fixed it up real nice

Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone, ill have a look down the battery compartment with a torch and the contacts on the battery pack. I know its not a major problem but ill call Minelab when i can this week and ask them also. Happy detecting with ya EXPLORER
