guy has an explorer se for sale here for $700...is that a good price...I can get an e-trac for a little more money...is that to much for the se...any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

You said SE... not SE Pro. That means you might need a better coil..... extra money. Now you are getting close to that ET price. Then it comes down to personal choice and learning curve. both are good machines.

Buy the SE PRO with the 11" pro coil only you'll be glad you did. I see them coming up on ebay constantly for auction for $5-650 some with several coils and other extra's.

Has anyone had any luck using the explorer se for locating gold?

What kind of gold..... raw or jewelery? I beach hunt and yes it does well. Raw gold.... the explorers are NOT effective raw gold machine. Get a Gold bug with a higher freq. I have used a raw gold test pad that a MXT could easily pick up...... you can rub it on the coil and NADA. So it will take a pretty good size nugget and those being low conductors.... well you best not be too far off the ground with the coil.

Dont rule out an explorer 2 either. Sounds about right in your price though.
