Explorer SE vs Explorer II

I had two Explorer II's a second as a back-up which was virtually unsed. I sold it and got an SE as a second machine - it has the Slimline coil. Can I use the new pro-coil on it anyway. How is this coil different?

In reading the manual it looks virtually the same to use. What is the main difference? I have had HUGE success with my Explorer II and love it [I know it is a little heavier but it is lighter than the old Explorer S that I started with] [read my article in the January 09 issue of Western Eastern about detecting 'detected out' sites.

Should I use the same settings as on my Explorer II?

ETC ETC.

I am one of those guys that is VERY slow to change. It took me 2 years to get the SE.

My opinion is get the new pro coil...then expect to raise the odds on raising the sens. and get some awsome digs in trash....it is like a small coil in a large coil...raise the sens. and don't look back...oh btw....your back will be happy...it is lighter than any 11 inch coil but gets the deep ones and seperates like a pro should!.....

The coil is great. The SE, for me, is a step down form the Explorer II. I purchased my new SE and gave it a one year trial. It is very close to the EII except it consistently gives a nice coin false signal on deep iron. The reason I purchased my SE is that, at the time, the ads said that it handled iron better. NOT ! I went back to my Explorer II and have a nice new SE hanging as a backup.

Here is the difference for me on a deep signal. SE= swing north and south: good high tone, swing east and west: good high tone; dig up a square nail. Same signal on the EII= dig up a coin or non-ferrous target. The EII will give a false on deep iron usually only in one direction (say, east to west swing, when turning north and south the ferrous target will null or at least break up).

Sounds like a small problem, right? Think about it - those are the signals that are usually the best finds. Those are the signals that I use the detector to find. Those are the signals that have made the Explorer famous. To be unable to determine (in conductive tones) between a deep nail and a deep coin renders the SE a pile of S$%&!

To compensate for this problem, I started using the SE in ferrous tones, all metal, with no discrimination. If you have followed this forum, you will note that lots of people run the SE that way (wonder why). Using all metal with ferrous tones did tend to push the iron false signals down to a lower tone, but you have to stare at the screen to figure out what you are over.

I did send mine back for a checkup and the folks at ML acted like they had never heard of this problem. I know many that have returned theirs for this problem. Anyway, they "put in all new guts" in my SE and replaced the coil. I used it a couple times but never had the confidence in it vs the EII.

I do this rant every now and then. Hope everyone will bear with me. I just don't drop over $1000 for a "New" model that works worse than the previous model without letting folks know. I tried to get my money back from ML but it fell on deaf ears.

I like the Explorer II and the new Pro coil is great but a tad sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
IMHO you were better off with two EII's.

Wow I haven't seen what you are talking about at all. My SE Pro does WAY better in iron than my II ever did. It may have to do with the fact it has the new coil, and the faster processor. But I haven't seen that at all. So your machine might be different, sorry you are having that issue with it. I've been really happy with mine, to the point I would not go back to the II. But everyone has a different view I know.

You can use the new Pro coil on it. That coil is the only difference between an SE and an SE Pro, besides a couple of stickers.

You can use pretty much the same settings but that doesn't mean you should. Experiment and find what works best for you. The factory presets are pretty decent to start with.

Didn't see much difference in either but many did not like the coil on the SE as being too sensitive and even heard of fellows using the 11 coil on the SE. All a matter of preference of hunting in your particuliar area..

I have an EX-II. Last year I detected with a fella that was using an SE. He had sold his EX-II to help get his SE. I asked him if it was worth it to him. He says there wasn't enough difference to upgrade, and felt he was doing a little better with the EX-II. I can't recall how long he had been using his SE though.

Big Fang ,

Thanks for your post ,so it isn't just me . I've been getting faked out on deep rusty Iron a lot with my SE . Wether i'm in iron mask or not doesn't seem to make any difference either . I keep thinking that the signal was so good there must be a high conductor in the hole with this iron also , wrong ! ! I've had an Explorer 2 for a couple of years now and I just acquired the SE in a trade a few months ago . The recovery on the SE seems just a tad quicker and the pinpoint a bit better but I never dug this much iron with the Explorer 2 . Looks like I'll be using the EX-2 as my primary detector .

I have been thinking about the new Pro-Coil but can't afford it right now. From everything I have read the coil is about the only thing different in the SE Pro.

True?? or Not?

Tim

Ground is thawing and my buddies and I have been talking daily about starting to swing [detectors that is]. Going to hit it next week!! First time of the year is always exciting up here in Upstate NY. We have to sit out for 2 - 3 months depending on how cold it is. This year is was really cold for about three weeks straight at one point, every day single digits. Good thing we had a nice snow cover - keeps the frost from getting as deep as it might.

No. There IS one other difference - a couple of stickers on the control box.

Hope you got a laugh, seriously, yeah that's pretty much it - the pro coil. And the stickers.
