Explorer SE new to me

New member
Been lurking here for a few weeks and reading through some recent history as well as watching some videos to learn about the SE that I have been awaiting. For the past 2 years I have been using what I thought was the high end of the low end machines, a tesoro cibola. Had many nice finds, however, I am convinced there is very little tone variation. Confirmation came when I went out with my neighbor a month ago to a park in the city. We did an air test and I was not too impressed with my depth. Soooo, when he found a decent signal with his XS, he had my son and I scan the area.....we both came up with a broken non-digging signal. Once unearthed , it turned out to be a clad dime. Not too much later, the same exercise produced the same results only this time he dug an 1806 LC in great shape. THen he dug and 1800's 1/2 penny from Montreal. He also had 5 silvers. I had a buf nickle and my son had some clad.

I knew this dissapointing day for me would be a great learning optty. So I searched the web for an explorer, landing an SE in great shape w/ 3 coils for a great price. It arrived today and I cannot wait to get to work and have my neighbor teach me the ropes.

Just thought I'd introduce myself as I usually post on the friendly forum, but this looks to be more equipment specific and I hope to become a small contributing part of this community. I also hope to show up my DFX er friend. No offense to anyone but for some reason I always felt they were a bit generic for some reason. I certainly don't feel they offer the technology of the MInelab generation.

Wish me luck! Peace from upstate NY.

Welcome, and you wont be disappointed with this machine. It is unbelievable.

I could write a book comparing the DFX to the SE, but I will spare you. :) I own both and while the DFX has it's benefits, the power of the SE is indisputable in my mind. You will not be disappointed. Now, having said that, those old coins may not start jumping out of the ground immediately like it did for your friend. It will take some time...less time if you get to hunt with him more so you can listen in on his signals. This is the BEST way to learn.

Stick with it.. Use Bryces settings.. he is a good guy and friendly. and buy the masters book on the Explorer and E-trac by Andy Sabisch Thats the bible to any SE and E-trac owners, I came off Tesoro detectors as well and have had many years of finding good stuff with them. Switched to the SE with Pro Coil about a year ago and havent looked back since.. I was about ready to pull my hair out when i first got it.. It has a learning curve.. but once you get passed it.. You can dig the deep stuff..

welcome to the Minelab brotherhood! you will not be disappointed with your choice but it is different from anything you have ever used. it WILL require patience and practice, practice, practice and as far as Bryce is concerned.........well if you ever meet or talk to a nicer, honest more down to earth guy ever, well count yourself lucky and go buy a lottery ticket. he knows his sh*# .

Thanks much...as for Bryce's settings; is this something I should begin now or am I ok learning with the factory preset? i certainly don't want to miss out on the goods by using the preset program. Headed out tomorrow for a bit.

I did try it out for an hour today and noticed a few things. Mainly, when i heard the hi pitched tone coupled with the crosshair in the top right, many times i could not get it to repeat consistently. is this a non digger?

Also, i did notice a good tone several times nulling out. Is this possibly some iron next to a good target?

Again i appreciate the advice.

you will still kick some serious buttocks:biggrin:

After you have logged a few hunts and quite a few hours...then is when you should start experimenting with different settings.

Each little change you make to certain settings can really change the sound heard. For now just leave it in the presets so you can familiarize yourself with the tones given off over coins andother desirable targets.

IMHO...You need to leave it basic for now in order to learn the nutty language the SE is speaking to you. If you don't...you might end up wrapping it around a tree:crylol:

I almost bought an SE or an explorer2. I ended up keeping my xs so I will be watching your posts and hope you do good with the new detector.

took my SE out for a couple 2 hours today....now i have owned a lot of machines in the past and never really took detecting seriously...i thought it was time to learn how to use the machines i have...i live in central florida....my dirt equals basically sand....with some grass here and there

bryce...i have been reading your posts here and trying to make use of the info...i have the books and really just started reading andys book on the SE and Etrac...i will be honest...i dont have a PHd in electronic theroy....so it will take me longer then others....

greaseman asked a question about a good sounding signal that bounced around in the top right corner 4 square...i passed on digging those today...i did follow your idea to get a good signal from 4 sides and thats when i was digging....a nice high flutie signal...checked 4 sides and then dug...seemed to be a place to start...

if the signal was bouncing around from side to side i passed...on these the audion signal did not stay the same....i would hear 3 or 4 different sounds....i did not dig...

i set up the machine by holding the power button for 6 seconds....then did noise cancel....then started a slow swing waiting for the nice sound...the only other adjustment was to the threshold just on the edge of hearing

i did remember seeing in a side page post about a surface coin would indicate a deep target...and i saw that with 2 quarters today...i could see the coin in the grass...yet depth indicator was almost full....maybe this was a tip from mike moutray

hold do you noise cancel. if i just push the noise cancel it starts making a noise like its looking for the quietest channel but it just keeps doing that. thanks.

chuck...on my SE and EX II.....the noise cancel makes the sounds 11 times while it's finding the channel...and then stops.

Not sure why yours would not stop??
