explorer screen

I bought a new Explorer XS in June. So far the only thing to happen to it is the headphone plug in is disappearing back in the handle. I will send it back and get that fixed soon. My question is this, I am new to metal detecting or as we say in Kentucky, I am green as a gord. I have taken my Explorer to the beach in Florida and the screen is impossible to see at high noon. Does anyone else have that problem, or should I become familiar enough with my machine so I don't have to use the screen.

Yeah its tough to see in the direct sun, after a while the tones will be enough anyway.. if you dont have one yet, get the sunray stand with 1/4 headphone adapter, it will save lots of stress on that 1/8th inch jack....

I had to have my 1/8 jack replaced. I have since found that if you loop the cord up over the arm cup and over the velcro you can use the velcro strap to hold the cord in place, which not only relieves the stress on the cable it also helps to keep the cord from getting caught under you elbow.
Just a suggestion.
Happy hunting.

Have you tried adjusting the contrast? As the screen darkens in hot weather I back the contrast down to 2-3 and its quite readable. When its cooler out and the screen lightens I up it to about 7. 5 if the default setting I think.

Thanks guys, I really thank you for these little clues. I am sure they will help me and others that read this forum. Thanks again. Jim

Hey Rog,
I used some wire ties and leave my ear phone cord plugged in all time. Before, it came unplugged every little bit, I was constantly pushing it back in. Another tid bit of info I want to pass along. I air tested some rings, nickles, pennies, dimes, and quarters the other evening in digital mode. This seems like it will work for me until I get better. Rings read 0 the same as foil, pennies read 25 through 27, nickles read 5, dimes read 27 maybe 28, and quarters read 28. I am also digging pieces of cast iron that reads 28 what am Idoing wrong ? Again I am new to this hobby and green with the XS.

I only switch to digital to help decide if an extremely iffy target is iron, and then still don't listen to it if I am getting a good enough reading in iron mask.
