hi .
i have a few questions maybe one of you guys can answer
1 sometimes when i sweep over a target the audio goes thud first what does that mean?
2. when in im as i sweep back and forth over a target the curser jumps from the upper left to the upper right on the screen ???
3.on some targets i only get a signal sweeping from one side and not on the return sweep or the audio changes depending on the direction of the sweep, does this mean there is a ferrous as well as a non ferous target ?
4. and lastly when the threshold goes null should i stop sweeping till it returns or will it continue detecting. even no tone ?

Hey div4gold,
I'll try to answer your questions:
1. I'm not sure what you meant on your first question.
2. That sounds like iron. When iron gets wet and rusty, it gives off variable signals. Or there could be two targets together--like a barber dime and a nail about 3 inches apart.
3. Yea, that sounds like a rusty iron object. Those rusty nails change signals alot when you change sweep angle. And when they sound like a silver coin, they don't seem to stay in the same place on the ground.
4. You do not have to stop sweeping. Just make sure you are sweeping slowly enough that you can hear each and every target. If you have a good strong target right next to a null, you will hear the null and then the target as you pass over them.
Good luck,
Mike

1st. sometimes when i sweep over a target the audio goes thud first what does that mean?
It thuds when the cursor bounces into a discriminated zone.
2nd. when in im as i sweep back and forth over a target the curser jumps from the upper left
to the upper right on the screen ???
This happens to me when it is a deep target or more than one target under the coil. Use the tones, try to zero in on the good tone by keeping the coil over the target and slowly walking around the target in a circle doing a 2" wiggle over it. The target can usually be isolated or zeroed in on better in one direction than another.
3rd. on some targets i only get a signal sweeping from one side and not on the return sweep or the audio changes depending on the direction of the sweep, does this mean there is a ferrous as well as a non ferous target ?
Trust the Explorer; even on the deepest targets when the signal sounds broken or fuzzy you can still here the detector trying to repeat back and forth. I Only dig repeatable signals.
4th. and lastly when the threshold goes null should i stop sweeping till it returns or will it continue detecting. even no tone ?
It will still detect with no tone but the Explorer is at maximum sensitivity when the threshold is present. When this happens I stop and let it regain threshold then sweep very slowly because I know I'm over a lot of iron. Set your sensitivity low enough to have a mostly present threshold. Found many a deep coin at sens 18. No threshold means your losing depth.
Hope This Helps

Don,
#1 One of the possible reasons why you get a "thud" relates to the Gain setting. The Explorer II has greater sound amplification for higher values of Gain, but it limits the maximum sound level to keep from "blowing out" your ears. These two factors means that targets that are being limited will be distorted. That will cause the initial thud sound. To verify if this is the problem you might just lower the gain to see if the thud goes away. I am not suggesting that you run with reduced gain, just do this to see if the Gain setting is the answer to the issue.
#2 There are multiple reasons why the cursor may jump from right to left. One reason is that rusty iron can give different responses when the target is over the outer rim of the coil rather than the center of the coil. If you are using the Conductive mode, then the sound will be the same, but the cursor will jump around.

To add to Glenn's excellent post using a variability of 8 seems to make the iron just a bit screechy to an experienced ear. Your variability setting may differ but indeed can help telling iron from that deep old silver coin..

gleen i reduced the gain tonite and i think it helped was hunting in a differt area but now that you mention it i dont recall the thud as much or not at all ..i lowered the gain before i read your posting and did nt pay much atention to it iwill pay closer to tommorrow thanks don
