Explorer Question

Please resolve this for me. With 28 frequencies I read over and over that Explorers are hot on deep silver coins. But little is said about gold jewelry? What I do read is that Explorers simply favor silver. Well what about this? As a jewelry hunter at the beach, I would have thought Explorers would love gold jewelry? BBS machines do, so why not FBS? Do most Explorer users just hunt for deep silver? How much gold jewelry do Explorer users really find? Because if FBS is not that hot on gold, then an Explorer might not make a great beach machine? I'm still shaking my head because I find this difficult to believe. Thanks for any opinions.

[size=large]the biggest reason i can see for folks finding gold with the fbs is that the dig every thing. i don't know. i found my second gold ring, 10k, with my explorer but it was because the reading was for what i though was a nickel. on smartfind screen, down low and to the middle . in my readinds the ml detectors certainly find a very goog collection of gold jewerly. not know for nugget hunting though.

Explorers good on all sorts metals -gold,silver, iron end etc... but usually most gold jewelry is small size or very small. explorer etracs dont like small items like other FBS. with chains and wires even bigger problem. But dont worry to much no better all round detector in the marked. FBS similar to BBS and a bit better. ask people how good sovereign or Excalibur on the beach.

Explorers/E-Tracs are NOT, IMO, as hot on gold as they are on silver. While "28 frequencies" is touted, it is a general belief amongst folks on some other forums I frequent that while "multi-frequency," the FBS units are biased toward multiple LOW frequencies, which resonate much better in the silver coin range -- thus the OUTSTANDING performance of these units on deep silver. On the other hand, they seem (as you have noted) to be "not as hot" on gold...and it HAS to be the range of frequencies favored by the FBS units...

THIS IS NOT to say that they won't find gold; even smaller gold is found at shallower depths by some Explorer users (not me! :) ). But they are clearly NOT the "gold killers" in the same way that they are "silver killers."

This is exactly what I'm hearing- some say Explorers are hot on gold at the beach, yet others feel they do better on deep silver? If one relied on what is mostly said on-line, one would think the reason to own an Explorer is to find old silver coins? If the Explorer does favor silver then that is what it is. I know for certain that BBS machines are HOT on gold and silver jewelry in the sea! I know for certain that my Garrett AT Pro and Infinium are much hotter on gold range targets than silver! Both hit a gold ring further than a silver. Because I know this and while both those detectors can hit silver, were I a coin hunter, I would not pick those as my machines of choice.

I intended using an Explorer as a beach hunter, but not if they're not hot on gold jewelry. Several knowledgeable people say they find plenty gold at the beach with Explorers. But then I read again Explorers prefer deep silver? I just want to believe Explorers will hit on gold jewelry as as good or better than most? I guess there is a good way to find out with my model Explorer... go the the wet sand and bury a large gold ring at 10-12 inches and the same with a similar silver ring. I suspect it will hit them both with the Pro Coil.

seahunter -- I expect your Explorer will hit both the large gold ring and large silver ring at 10-12 inches in dry sand. I don't know enough about wet sand to comment. But, I know plenty of guys find gold at the beach with Explorers. They WILL find gold. They are not the BEST units for that -- ESPECIALLY for the very small stuff, but they will find gold for you. Don't interpret what you read to say that they are NOT any good at finding gold; I'm simply saying they are not the BEST. One thing I do know, they are the hottest machines on silver (along with E-Tracs) that I know of in existence.

My opinion IS INDEED that the reason to own Explorers IS to find silver...as this is what they do better than ANY other machine, IMO. Just like probably the best machine for micro gold is the Gold Bug 2, the best VLF machine for absolute depth is an F75 LTD, etc. Some machines are simply better than others at one or two specific tasks, but that does NOT mean that they cannot do other things well. That's how I feel about Explorers. They do many things well, but the area they stand head and shoulders above, is finding deep silver. Just my two cents worth! You have a great machine, and I think it will serve you very well in whatever type of hunting you employ it in.
