Explorer or MXT?

Steelhead

Hey guys!
I've done a fair amount of research on both the MXT and the Explorer. I primarily hunt old homes, but occassionally hit the beach on weekends. I'd like to get opinions from people who have or have had both units and what their preference is. I'm usually on the search for coins/jewelry. I'm trying to decide on one unit.

Thanks for any input you can provide!

The Explorer is tough to beet. But, personally I prefer the MXT. My personal opinion is that for the beach, the Explorer has the edge. But, the Explorer is very slow, and that drove me nuts. The Explorer is more complicated than it needs to be. If you walk over a target and you know what how to use the machine you are using, you will find the target regardless of the machine you are using. The MXT is the machine I prefer to use mainly because I like the knobs and switches. I don

Both great machines and two completely different animals. Before I chose the MXT the Explorer was one of the detectors I tried out. My friend loves it. I couldn't stand it mainly because I have no patience. I grab my MXT from the truck and go! Also, I don't care what anybody says, he has gone behind me and found stuff I missed and I have gone behind him and found stuff he missed, so that being said, if you don't have the opportunity to try them both first then just stop and think about the type of person you are. Grab it and go, or tinker around and go. If you do like all the bells and whistles you may want to take a look at the DFX. I believe the White's are sturdier machines, not heavier. And yes I know the Explorer will get easier to use once you have some time with it, I just don't want to take the time. HH with either one you get.

I have them both plus a Sovereign GT and the new Fisher F-75. These are all great detectors, but one of the easiest to use is the MXT and it is fun to use. I like to run the relic mode for coin hunting as I like the 2 tone audio as I can swing faster. The Explorer is also a very good detector and if you have the patience to use it you will do good also and probably do better once you have learned it well. It does have a learning curve some don't have the patience to learn plus you have to swing the coil slower too.
The MXT is used by my wife more than me now as it is so easy to use for her and she can go faster and get more coins than I do, but most all hers are new coins while I get the older ones with the Explorer or the GT that are deeper. If you have the time and patience the Explorer is very good, but it is not made for the person that wants to detect a couple hours a week, but for the person that wants to spend a good 12 hours or more a week detecting in order to learn and understand it.
The MXT is by far the best Whites i ever used in my 33 year of detecting, the Sovereign GT is the best coin detector I have used and dig less trash with it verses coins, but the Explorer can tell me more about a target if it is a penny or a silver dime or even a quarter.

have you lookd at the M6? It is primarily a coin/jewelery machine with 7 tones hunting should be even faster than the MXT (imho one of the best all around machines out there) it's quieter and every bit as deep. Couldn't be easier to get up and going. I saw a post somewhere about it being pretty good for gold but havn't been able to find the post again.

Alright. Since the GT was brought up I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. I traded my GT for a Whites M6 for a number of reasons. It was too awkward to use. I had to keep mt left hand free to operate the pinpoint switch. The controls are at the worst place to have controls on a metal detector I think.
Like the Explorer you have to go real slow to get the deep ones. (But at least you can still hold on to a tool.) I didn't mind searching slow.
And I was tempted to shave about 4 inches off the GT's lower shaft so I could hunt with my arm straighter. It was too long for me to hunt comfortably.
So far I really like my M6. Feels great in my arm and is a lot lighter then my GT was. Haven't really took it anywhere where deep coins might be. But I would rather find gold rings then an old dime any day and like the MXT the M6 is suppose to be good at that. Although I did find gold with the GT...And I do miss the GT's tones.
Heck! Maybe I'll get a Explorer too!
