I've been using a fairly tight disc. pattern with my Explorer and noticed that most of the pros on the FBS forum hunt in Iron Mask. So I thought I would try it to see if I can see any advantages to hunting that way.
The first thing I did was get various denominations and types of coins together like buffalo, V and modern nickles, various dimes, quarters, etc. Even some common trash items like tabs and screw caps. Then I used my X-1 probe to see where each of these appear on the Iron Mask screen (set at -6) trying to note were they lined up in relation to the various letters and words and boxes above, below and next to the screen. For instance, nickels come in about centered on the Pinpoint box with the bottom of the curser just a little above the bottom of the screen, etc. I did this with my X-1 probe only because it is really easy to do this with the probe in the house.
Armed with this information I went out to search my front yard again for the umpteenth time. What I discovered is that by using Iron Mask instead of a tight disc. pattern I am better able to see what is under the coil and determine if my "good" signal is real or if it is a minor false off the edge of a trash item. Also, the tones aren't as broken up from bouncing in and out of my disc. pattern and the Explorer seems to recover faster and give a truer curser postion on the target.
Recently some have said that they experience greater depth in Iron Mask but I wasn't able to determine if that was the case or not. I did find a few more pennys and a dime that lay lurking in my yard that I hadn't discovered before. I was a bit surprised that the the dime was just a bit off from where it I would have expected it (but solid and I was sure it was a dime) and a piece of foil I had passed over many times before was indicated a little more left on the screen than it had before but still on the bottom.
And I felt more comfortable about what I thought was under the coil more so than before. That may be from just more experience with the detector but at any rate I think I will start huning in Iron Mask mode. Its only a buttons push away to get back to my tight disc. pattern if I start to feel overwhelmed with signals.
One other observation -- I noticed when I get close to or over what I think is my TV cable line or burried home power line the Explorer starts playing what sounds like a symphony orchestra tuning up. No matter how low I run the sens. it just plays away. Guess I will leave the coins over those cables to the less powerful "other brand" users. HH
