Explorer II user settings?

Ryan O'Shea

New member
Hey. I was wondering what settings people are using. I am kinda wanting to tinker around and see what people have come up with.
Can anyone using an Explorer II post some user settings? Or tips, tricks and/or advice on some good settings? Im new to the machine. And before I go hunting my friends old properties I wanna test some out. I live in Oregon. And I am mainly going to be looking to find the old silver coins, deep coins ext.

The more screen you black out, the slower the machine is to respond because it is a metal detector first and foremost. When you black out the screen you are asking the machine to do extra and therefore it is slower. Also some say they miss good stuff when they use too much discrimination.

If you use automatic sensitivity all the time you will most assuredly miss stuff. The manual sensitivity is best to use because when sensitivity adjusts automatically, say if you are in a small area that the machine thinks needs to have lower sensitivity, it will stay at a lower sensitivity after you move past that spot and you have no way of knowing what the sensitivity is set at by the machine automatically. Manual sensitivity lets you be certain you have your machine set to the highest possible sensitivity and you can move it up and down as the areas you detect permit.

In my experience having variability at 10 helps. People have different opinions about Gain but in my opinion 7-8 is too low.

Fast is sort of confusing because I think when you use it you need to go really slow, on the other hand you can pick out things you might ordinarily miss in really trashy areas.

Deep is a matter of preference, it boosts signals that are faint because the machine makes symbols sound faint that are deep. Some people like to listen to how deep something is by how loud or faint it is and for that it is helpful. I look at the screen, personally. Also using deep allows you to swing faster because you do not have to worry about concentrating on faint sounds.

Thanks for the tips! I will give em a try and see what happens.

Ryan, what worked for me was to experiment by digging holes and take a wooden ruler and measure down 12 inches and what I did was take a sheet of plastic about 4inches around and place your silver quarter on the plastic and cover the hole back up and go over it with your SE and try different settings. 12 inches is a long way down in moist dirt and I was in all metal mode 32 in iron mask with deep on and I heard a sqeak and switched to digital and it showed 00--29 on the screen. See my problem was I could not find old coins and thought I was not getting deep enough so I had to make sure that my detector was working properly and not malfunctioning. Turns out, the places I was detecting were not used very much like older parks and thats why I was not getting older coins. Lots of clad but ya need to go slow and try different coins underground and it will teach you what you need to know. Lot of guys don't have the patience to learn and give up on it to soon and want to sell their detector, don't go there take some extra time and you will be pleased when it all comes together. Easymoney

There are so many different things to tweek on the EX II so first find a setting you are comfortable with and save it, then when you are out detecting try little different changes to your main program to see how differently the machine responds. Don't try to change to much all at once or you could get discouraged. I've been using the EX II for about six years and still find little changes that will help in different situations. HH

Thanks guys. I am not discouraged at all. In fact I love learning the machine. I am just curious about what people have tried. Or are using for their settings. I tend to like to hear whats working from people who have hands on experience. Helps the learning go faster.
Thanks a lot for responding guys.
