Explorer II Threshold Question

I've had my X2 for a couple of weeks. I was out this morning when I ran into a problem with my threshold. Whenever my coil got to within a half inch from the ground, my threshold would disappear. No matter what my threshold level was set at, the same thing would happen each time I got it close to the ground. When I would raise the coil the threshold would return. I use a "Joey" coil. The grass was heavy with dew and the coil got a good soaking. Is it possible that water could have entered the coil and caused the problem. I know that the "Joey" is supposedly water resistant but not waterproof. Later this afternoon, after sitting on my workbench for about 8 hours, everything worked fine. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone have any ideas about the possible cause of my problem?

I'd take the new EX2 into familar territory to see how it reacts. There's times I have my EX1 out and it seems to go haywire and I usually find a cause (buried power lines, etc.). I plan to grab a Coiltek 15 incher this week and I'll take it out in my backyard because I know where the 10.5 acts differently.

The explorer nulls over any rejected target, including iron, it will also null in some cases of high mineralization, this is normal....if your treshold returns off the air, then its not a problem... just need to hunt slower in a null, or try iron mask set low, if its not iron causing the nulling, it should reappear, but of course you will now hear the rejected targets

Jim,
Thanks for the response. I also thought that it may be the mineralization because I was detecting in an area that I was not familiar with. But I had my MXT in my truck also, so I used it in the prospecting mode to check mineralization. It read 52, which is not high at all. I also tried it in my own yard when I got back home. The problem still existed eventhough I had used it before in my yard with no threshold problem. I don't think that it was nulling over iron because it happened anywhere I set it close to the ground in the schoolyard. I didn't think of trying IM. Thanks again, Pete.

Bill, I tried it in my yard when I got home and still had the threshold problem. Eventhough I had detected there numerous times with no problem. Thanks for the reply, Pete.

Shellback, thanks for the response. It was a continuous null in the schoolyard and in my own yard. Pete.

Hey Pete,
Goto the area where you have constant nulling. Set the XS on the ground and hit noisecancel. This should help you find a channel to operate from that does not recieve interference from nearby powerlines or sources of constant electronic fields. If that does not work, go to iron mask mode and select iron mask -16 which is in all metals mode. Sweep the ground slowly to see if there are millions of targets present in a small area. If there are millions of targets, that may have been why there was no threshold for you. If you have a bunch of discrimination (blacked out area on your screen) and there are millions of targets, you will get continuous null when you move the seach coil. Place search coil on the ground and do not move. Your threshold should be present when the coil is not moving. If your threshold does not return when the coil is not moving, there is probably an electronic device nearby, but the noisecancel should have remedied that problem. Good luck.
Mike

Hey Mike,
Tried that, done that. I use noise cancel everytime I start detecting. IM-16 still had no threshold. Neither did holding the coil on the ground in one place. I went back to the same area yesterday, and everything worked fine. So, I'm not going to worry about it. I spent 20 years in the navy working on sonar gear and those intermittent problems were always the most difficult to troubleshoot. And if it works, don't fix it.
Thanks a lot for your input, and have a real good day.
Pete
