explorer II handle

I hope this the proper forum for this question.
my exp-2 handle is so loose it feels like swinging a rubber hose.
I have worked with the cam lock and other ideas but
nothing helps. it is loose where the shaft goes
into the detector head. has anybody had this problem and what did you do to fix it.

Yeah have the same problem but i use a wot coil and swing for hours, maybe its your sweep speed who knows it is made of plastic , had the problem with the xs everyone remember that problem? it feels loose but cant pinpont the problem oh well if it breaks ill just buy a new one hope you can fix it, how long have you had the machine? ive had mine since day one so i guess its been awhile use it everyday. good luck.

You may have checked this already but just as a reminder.
Make absolutely sure the top shaft is slid all the way into the housing with the longest/tapered end of the shaft on the bottom and not top side, otherwise the shaft will not seat all the way in for a firm grip. Can't tell you how many times I've seen that happen to folks.
If that's not it, maybe you have cam-lock problems or could be the rubber boot inside the housing is damaged ???
Haven't heard of any cam-lock cracks on the EX II yet, pretty sure Minelab got that fixed.
H.H.

I had a slight looseness with my Exp. II (purchased in July 05)at the same location. The shaft was oriented correctly, and in as far as it would go. The wobble was just enough to be annoying, as you could feel it at the end of a swing. Try some electrical or painters tape on the shaft. I found that the replacement shaft that came with my Sunray X-1 (Xmas gift) fits tight, so there is a tolerance difference, which I suspect is in the thickness of the paint as applied from the factory. Apparently there is not a wide margin of error with the cam lock. I e-mailed the Minelab customer service gentlemen a few weeks back, and the response was that this was the 1st they have heard of the problem, but would fix it if necessary. I suggested an adjustable cam lock, as I found it strange that it was not. Most cam locks that I have had experience with have an adjustment screw.

Mine does the same, but only when set farily long. If I shorten it a bit then it goes away.
Rather than a cam lock problem, perhaps a carbon shaft diameter problem. Will get the verniers out on mine when I get home.

YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK YOUR BOTH RIGHT WHEN I SHORTEN THE SHAFT ITS LESS FLEXY AND A ADJUSTABLE WOULD BE ALOT BETTER HMMMMMMM I WONDER IF MINELAB READS THESE POSTS. DANG MY CAPS WERE LOCKED NOT GOING TO TYPE THIS AGAIN:smoke:

In response to some of the above messages, I also contacted
minelab about this some time back. they advised me about the
proper orientation of the shaft. was purchased spring 05.
Anyway I just purchased a dfx.

For those of you not realizing it, the "looseness" is in the upper shaft where it enters into the box. This is the 1st I've heard of flex or looseness in lower shaft. If you extend the lower shaft beyond a certain point, there will be some flex as well as the rigidity lost by encapsulating a portion of the LOWER shafts upper end. You may be extending the lower shaft beyond its design limit.
I believe that I communicated with Dick Schultze at Minelab USA about the original problem. He was unaware that it was a common occurence.

I had the same problem ..... drove me nuts all season . It's the cam lock.... I replaced the cam -Lock ( took it off of another shaft I had and it's nice and tight now . I think the cam -lock lever wears out from use .

Minelab contacted me today and was very nice to me about the
problem. they asked for my suggestions and advised me to
send the detector to them and they would fix it.

I would suggest that they be informed of this forum so that they can referr to it. I couldn't believe that "it was the 1st the've heard of it". I was seeing many posts like this as far back as last May.
