Explorer goes crazy?

Hey guy's, I need help. Went out yesterday, and in a part of the field (I've been there before w/out problems) my explorer went crazy! different tones and the x was all over the place! It happen the day before (at a different locale), I am thinking its the cold, I'd say 30* or higher it was. Hit noise button and resestted it, did'nt help. When I moved away it was ok. There was a fence about 10' away, don't think that caused it though. Any help would be welcome. ken

Try reducing your sensativity. All I can think of is highly mineralized ground, due to cinder or something similar.

I bought my explorer a week ago and have those problems. Its like every swing I get bombarded with signals.
make sure your coil is clean. sometimes dirt and stuff get under the coil cover. Try using semi-auto and use fast recovery. Or even switch coils if you have another.Make sure your gain is not to high, you might want to lower it to 5. These have all been said to me as my problems. I have a post on false signals, scroll down and you will have information.

if you are near an "invisible fence" for dogs, or similar strong electro/magnetic interference, nothing may stop it from going crazy. i was able to hunt a part of my backyard only after i unplugged the invis. fence.

not the cold,I've been out way below 30* and not a problem at all.otherwise watch your pouch, shovel, boots etc.

Brian brought up a good point, your not wearing steel tipped boots are you? I actually bought shoes with no metal in them to use for detecting.. even the steel eyelets will cause signals from the explorer if the coil gets close while walking

Hi mate, try and do a noise cancel manually.Remember and wait a second or two after changing number for it to "kick in".
As already stated go to manual sens. start off low (say) 10 and gradually move up until not stable or loss of threshold when sweeping.

No I dont wear steel toed boots. I think I figured out why it falses, one of the rubber/plastic washers on the bottom of the lower shaft was gone. The coil was loose so I put another on and coil does not wiggle around anymore.
thanks Ryan

no, it seem's like it was the area. granted i didnt clean my beast in a few hunts, i guess i should, i just hope its not broken, i just got it in nov.

fine before and it was particulary whacko in a certain area where a couple pop cans had been chopped up by a lawn mower, but generally unstable all over the park where previously it was very stable. Nothing worked, reduced the gain, sens, noise canceled, reset the machine. The problem was dirt and moisture under the coil cover, gave it a good cleaning and it worked fine after that. Now I clean it before every hunt. I also keep the coil wire tight and in close to the shaft, nothing flopping around.

I seemed to notice it just a bit today. I went to an area that has been known to cause any unit to go beserk. We used to have our annual yearly hunt there. Just wondering (I just read the manual in detail myself) if you are giving the unit enough time to calibrate itself to interference, seems like I read this procedure could take up to 30 seconds to go through its paces? I was near power lines, the Noise button after I pressed seemed to take care of the cross-talk.

Is the Ground a lot wetter then when it worked before ? Some times a wet ground will make a detector pick up more items ? have you have a lot of rain there lately ?
