explorer coils

:detecting:hi can anyone tell me which coil they prefer on ex 2 for hunting sites with iron? any info is greatly appreciated thanks hh:coiltec:

I would try using the Joey Coil. I have one and it can get in between trash exceptionally well. I have made some recoveries with it when there has been a problem with Iron. You could use the stock coil, but it might be to big and the iron will most likely mask the good finds unless you run -16 Iron mask and go and try the ferrous tones. Most everything that rings high will be something good (sometimes nails you will get too) but for the most part, It will be copper, brass, etc. The 5" would work well too. Hope this helps you out and you start finding the stuff that is masked by the Iron. Good Luck!

i just got 5" coil "sunray" i was worried about depth, the coins from this spot are from 1794 - 1864 and no coin has been higher than a half dime. i get some signals from my ex 2 in one direction but nothing in another. i'll run im 16 with ferous tones and see what happens thanks again hh

I got my 5" coil late last year and have found some goodies with it. I really like it in iron trash around these old house places that I hunt. I found a IH today and have it soaking in olive oil to see if I can get some of the crud off it, the funny thing is, I found it about 75 yards from the house site behind a small pond where someone in modern times had been sawing some cedar trees up. I got the signal and thought because it was so shallow that the person who had been sawing had dropped a zinc penny. IT was only about a half inch under the soil, goes to show you gotta dig. You can set the sensitivity up higher than the stock coil.

Johnny,
I mainly use the 18" and 5" coil's depending on the conditions. I found my first ever "I" button the other day with the 18" in a high target area. I hunt in IM 15-16.

Just goes to show the need to be willing to try the seeming unreasonable, I have dug some old coins in high trash with my 15". Going over the same ground with diff. coil sizes is a very good idea.

Another big "Thank you" for your service!

I love the 5 inch coil on the Exp II and I OWN a 15 inch WOT coil. But I'm a bit intimidated by the large coil, simply because it's "seeing" such a large volume of soil that there's got to be a ton of trash in with the isolated "goodie". I'm hoping to use the WOT at the shore this summer (God willing) and then dig everything.

good in trash and max depth for proper ID is 6.5 inches. I just got a new Excellerator 14" and will try it tomorrow where the coins have dried up. My favorite coil for heavy iron trash sites is the Minelab 7.5 and it gives correct ID down to 8" and my second favorite so far is the standard 10.5" and I will say that not all same make and same size coils are created equal.

A mono is a single coil, a concentric has two with one inside of the other, and a double D has two with the Ds back to back. The mono uses one coil for both a transmitter and receiver with electronic switching while the concentric and double D have one for a transmitter and the other for a receiver. I think this is correct unless I am starting to forget how these coils are wound.
