Explorer advanced settings question

Hi All,
I've come up with some more questions on the explorer in my pursuit to figure this machine out. In the Mastering the Minelab Explorer book on page 79, paragraph (h), it says "Check the setting by passing the various the various coins across teh coil. If any still are rejected, change the cursor size to SMALL (if you were using MEDIUM) and repeat the steps described above. This will enlarge the white areas slightly and ensure you are getting all the coins you might come across." Wouldn't changing the cursor to small discriminate even more making the machine possible reject coins? I'm confused about the cursor sizes, because Andy mentions several times that medium cursor size may pick up more trash but not miss coins, but above he is saying use the smaller cursor size if coins are being rejected. Can someone help me with this one?
Also, in the advanced settings, which Audio is the preferred method...Normal or Audio 1,2 or 3. Thanks for any help.
Chris

If you are starting with a blank (no discrimination) screen and learn in rejected signals going to a smaller cursor will leave more area unrejected. If you are starting with a darkened(everything discriminated) screen and learn in "good" signals a bigger cursor will open up more area. You can create patterns either way.
But... Having said that, most consider pattern building a waste of time for general purpose detecting. When coins are in the ground and mixed with other goodies you really don't know where the cursor will hit and you will miss many good signals. Someone just posted on the other forum that he found some barber quarters that hit on the upper left side of the screen. This is common if coins are next to iron. The standard coin pattern, iron mask over -12 or -14, and most custom patterns would have missed these.
You really just have to get used to all the noise and chatter of multiple signals and sort it all out with your brain.
Normal Audio is the default, the others have a place but not in trashy areas.
Hope this helps

Chris,
snip <The standard coin pattern, iron mask over -12 or -14, and most custom patterns would have missed these.>
I thought that the higher you get on the negative scale in iron mask, the more you accept and less you reject? Wouldn't -12 or -14 pick up almost everything, or is my logic in reverse? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just trying to get a grip on this. Thanks

At -14 you are running with almost no DISC you will hear almost everything and that is the best way to go for most.
There are times I have run say (-10) and pulled a few good coins then went back over an area with a setting of (-14) and pulled more good targets than I had the first time over .
Your ears are the best Disc as the curser moves only after you get back to clear ground so a piece of Iron along with a Coin will almost always show up as Iron with the curser position but the tone says dig me.
The problem is most don't think they can listen to all that noise all the time but they almost always come around when they know there are good coins to be had where they are hunting.

What sound setting do you set it at, Conduct or Ferrous? I have been over targets in conduct
IM -10 that the tone was nice and high but did not dig because the cursor would not go to the right side any. What is your standard for digging? High tone plus cursor location or just a high tone.

then go back at -15 iron mask and you will find more hidden, a big thing to remember is the more you mask the more your curser will (LOCK) up and not move......open the IM more and you will see that curser fly faster and faster and dont sweep fast because the xs will lock on real good and the tone will be the dead give away and when you open to IM -14-15-16 you will see more and more good finds then you thought were there with -10, sure it is more to listen to BUT the more you hear the more you find <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">............HH Bri

sites require different settings, take a site that has alot of larger Iron (not nails) I will go ferrous if it is a park and has Iron pull tabs shreaded cans I will use conductive.
I have some spots that I go and hunt an area one way then change and go over again the other way so what I am saying is you have to make the right choice for you.
You need to remember that nails will always give a high tone ((((((((((BUT)))))))))) they will not stay centered and I seem to hear it null befor it beeps I don't seem to hear it null on a good ferrous target.
If you choose conductive tones the Iron will be high pitch ((but I hear it shreak)) coins will have the high tone but seem to be more mellow and sort of like it sings, I almost always know silver in the first pass.
To do a test get some bent rusted nails and some silver coins and a stack of magazines, put a bent nail and say a dime next to each other and put around 3 to 5 inches of books on them walk around the targets and hit from all directions this will help you understand a bit better and will help tune your ear, also put a nickel and a dime close togeather and you will notice a tone difference do them alone and mix up diferent trash with them and in no time you will automatically know when to dig.
Do all your practice at around 10 on the sens and always use manual automatic is for the person that really doesn't want full control of the machine.

I have a coin pattern that I use and leave I check the nail not x it out but put a check in the box and when I hear that high pitch I look to see if it went to the upper eft corner and if it does I just stroll on.
