Explorer 4

I know the Explorer Se has only been out a few months , but i have been pondering over just what features the Explorer 4 would have to have be better than the SE. I cant think of any really. Just 1 improvement i think would be fantastic, please minelab put the SE control box on a dfx shaped detector or ex terra shape, or the f75 type f75 does look like its been copied from the dfx/xlt shape. :)

You forgot about a better screen that you can see in bright day light, less glare...or is that a necessary evil? Lighter weight is good also...a clock function since I am always getting home late for supper,I forget I have a phone with one on it cause I am focused on detector screen and a better charge indicator on charger since there is not any. Maybe sunray has one? Just thinking out loud...sorry! I would love to have a memory card you can put in before a hunt and then record all graphics of each target readings no matter what screen you are on...then get back home and pull out memory card and insert into computer and go over all targets and see just what the depth was, where the cursor was located ,target digital #'s were, what were all your set up preferences were...etc...that would be cool...then fine tune and tweak to perfection just for that one area...of course we all know it can change from day to day to site from site...but it is all relative. Now that would put metal detecting into the future!!Or up to speed with the rest of technology. This hobby still feels like a dinosour hobby.Chop Chop techs!! :throw:

the things that I would like to see on the exp is a screen you could replace for $12 like the whites and a decent depth indicator maybe like the whites also with a toggle vco pinpoint and tell you how deep the target is other than that it is a great md HH RonC

I agree with a easier to see display. To go really far out on the wish limb, I would like a color display like most of the newer GPS systems have.

It would be great to then have the colors display in a meaningful way to perhaps give an indication of depth. Another thing could be one color on the display for your desired targets to be the background for your crosshair. Then you could see for instance if the crosshair is where a $5 Gold coin falls. Something you possibly would dismiss going by your personal memory alone.

But, the SE is great. I guess you could add GPS, Bluetooth, etc. and folks would buy it whether they actually need it or not.

I think what most treasure hunters really care about is performance. Nautilus is a good example. It is about as basic as it gets, but it does perform well and it doesn't even have a display, pinpoint button, external speaker, and the batteries are not even inside the box.

The Excaliber is another example. It's technology is kind of getting long in the tooth but it is still performing at the top.

Even so, I look for Whites, Minelab and Fisher to release some very inovative detectors in near future that improves on everything we use today. Quality and performance will be at the top of the list with user friendly bells and whistles close behind.

Just my take. Only the future will let us know for sure.

My pipe dream is to have the heads phones with solar collectors on them. The charging power runs back down the headphone cable and supplies the detector. The batteries are only drawn down when the solar power drops below the working volatge. :drinking: I know, wish in one hand, and .... in the other.

so people could easily swap programs with their friends or download them from online to put into your own Minelab Explorer.

They said others have made the suggestion and guess it isn't going to happen.

for lighter weight and longer run time, full submersion capability, and the ability to select the frequencies used (imagine notches, any of which can be turned on or off, independant of one another) and the ability set sensitivity for each of those notches. Not really notches in the classical sense, but independant frequency control and sensitivity for each.

The last change would turn the Explorer into any machine you want, a coin shooter that ignores tiny bits, or a tiny nugget shooter for prospecting.

The display could be MUCH better for the price we pay for an Explorer, and a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) backlight level control would be great too. Going further, the backlight could auto-dim and only come on when something falls in the "accept" areas, auto-dimming again after a few seconds or lack of "accept" signal.

It's really funny you say that because I thought the exact same thing before. I actually work at SanDisk and was thinking how great it would be to save your programs etc. to a MicroSD card and then use the SD adaptor to take them to your computer.

Imagine a software you could use to create your own custom audio. Make silver sound like a GOAT instead of a high flutey sound ;) There are alot of possibilities not to mention by adding an external card it could free up space in the control box making it smaller.

For my 2 cents worth, in addition to a better display, how about long and narrow accessory coil such at the Bigfoot that Jimmy Sierra makes for the Whites line? It probably wouldn't go as deep as the stock coils, but the Explorer line does not suffer in the depth department. For newer parks and playgrounds where the finds arent likely to be very deep, I love the XLT and Bigfoot. I think the Explorer with the Bigfoot type of coil would be an unbeatable combination. I know it would beet the Eagle spectrum or XLT on a salt water beach. Again, just my 2 cents worth and maybe worth a bit of discussion.
