Experimenting with tones on the Omega

Hi All,
Because the Omega hits so well on our Australian coins in d2 mode, I have seldom taken it out of that mode. I have been very happy with the performance of the Omega, but haven't found much in the way of jewellery..a few silver items (necklace, bracelet and pendant), and although I've snagged 5 rings, none have been gold or silver. Today when I was out, I had found a couple coins in d2, then decided to try d4. No rings or jewellery (this time) but the change in disc mode made me feel as if I was hunting with a different detector...had to start learning all over again:lol:. I found a few more coins (nothing startling), but where an how I found them made me think more about using the multi-tone modes, even if they dont perfectly suit our coinage, I am now thinking that the chances of finding stuff other than coins might be higher. I suspect (from my own experiences with the Omega and the reports of others) that I may not get the depth in d4 that I do in d2, but I'm going to give d3 and d4 more usage, and see what happens. HH

Today I decided to hunt a few hours with the D-2 tones this is totally opposite of my normal D-4 setup. Ground was 64, discrimination at 17, sensitivity at 90, I noticed no significant difference in depth on targets and within about 2 hours went back to my preference the D-4 setting; it's a real killer on U.S.A Coins.

I can understand why you would prefer d4 tone, feldmanclad. I found when I used the d4 tone that I was listening more intently to what the detector was saying, before checking the VID. In my book, this can be a positive aspect of human discrimination, rather than expecting the detector to do it for you. I also listen intently when I use d2, but the audio discrimination became a whole new ball game in d4.

Try a different frequency setting, see how it does.

I use both modes but use d2 as my primary and check all signals in d4. As Monte alerted me too before the d2 mode is deeper than the d4 mode (which sounds deeper cause it's amplified.) Just find a fringe target in d2 mode and check it in d4 mode for proof, I have.

Since d4 mode is not as deep I hunt in d2 mode as I don't want to miss the deep targets (and I don't). That said, I have found that the d4 mode hits clean and clear when it's a coin. If the coin is in iron you can hear a fuzzyness around it, almost a widening. The d2 mode seems to almost always sound clear to my ears. I wish I could get more from the d2 mode as far as knowing if it's a coin or not. I can tell a bit regarding the size of the target since d2 is modulated I get a better idea of depth than the d4 mode. Guess I just have to practice.

If you prefer a mode, I would say to use the opposing mode to check targets will only help you to understand your detector more. I love checking targets in other modes (d2 and d4)

Note - I read other boards and have to say, most coin hunters don't like using modulated audio as much as beeps, as far as I've noticed anyway.

Thanks earthmansurfer, good advice and makes sense. Like most of us, I'd like to be able to get out more, and try new things. I guess I have been so impressed with the performace of the Omega (in d2) that I have been concentrating on that mode mainly, and I can see that I have so much more to learn by using the other modes more....and I haven't started on all-metal yet....:heh:
