Experimented with Notch on GT

I was in a very trashy park in Buck Co. PA today, and tried the Notch for the first time Very interesting. I just found clad coins, but very few pull tabs crept in. My deepest finds were about 7". I'm going to try testing in my backyard. Has anyone used the Notch control on the GT? How did it work for you?

I've got a grassy area(loaded with pulltabs) adjacent to a freshwater beach that I plan to try notch on.Somewhere I have read where a member used notch on such an area and really pulled out the clad and I would think larger gold and all silver rings would come through although I'm not sure about the smaller gold jewelry that fall in the foil range.DBULL

I have used the notch a few times, but not something I use much at all. Many people don't understand it well enough to use it, but the disc has to be set less than the notch is set for it to work, the reason is the notch is a variable disc that disc out only a small area that has not been disc out by the main disc. Neither the disc or notch set to max will disc out the zinc pennies or higher, but can disc out the nickles and gold. When I have used mine I set the disc at as low as it will go, or a slight disc, then if there is a certain pull tab or other trash item I don't want to pickup I will swing the coil over that item and turn the notch until I either lose it or the signal breaks up so I know it is not a good target. Now it will not notch out all the trash items, but those that read in that one area I have notched out. Mostly mine when used is the pull tabs like the newer ones that read up in the `160-170 range and found just turn the notch to max and will take care of most of them as they will be broken up signal so I can walk right over them. I still get some of the others that read in the 150, but know they are not good unless the signal is smoother sounding as I will dig those with the hope of a gold ring.
The only time I really use the notch is those areas with a lot of the certain type tabs where you get several in one sweep so I don't have to check each one. It has its purpose when needed.

I tested it and not only did it notch out the pull tab but the gold ring and at that leval of notch if a ring is under a pull tab you will not hear it but if you set it just right it will crackle and you at least know whats down thear

the sov will not disc out clad so you can even turn up the disc all the way and stil get the clad. If you want nickels you can play around with the notch but your gonna loose everything that comes in the range your notching out, its pretty simple really.

The problem with notch on any machine is you dont know how many close target are being disced. Take a TID machine that uses say over 180 digits and one that uses 30 to id targets. Think about notching on both these machines. If you notch out 2 digits on the 30 digit machine.... thats a lot not to mention it has an affect on targets near the zone notched as well. Patterns are a great way to hunt if you have little time and want to only key in on a certain target. Otherwise i only use them once ive hunted the area in my normal style or wide open. Just cuts down on coil shut down and loose of depth.

I have used detectors with the notch system since 1992 when set up right they can be a powerful tool. On the Compass detector the notch could be set off on reject which was a great feature! On the GT I have used it several times, but I bench test it before leaving. The notch will notch out only one item and any item that matches that item electrically speaking! If that makes any sense.I notched out a pop top and then checked 20 gold rings against the notch. It was so cool to see all the rings made it though except the biggest mans ring! The tiny littlest girls ring was fine the mans 1oz school ring not! It just matched perfectly to the pop top.

Im not math whiz.... but i dont think id be notching those pop caps. Could be a bad pay day with you buddy cashing in behind you lol.

IF i use disc on my Exp its on coins and other distractions not the range im hoping to find gold. Lets face it thats where the money is on a beach. Some form of notch would be a gift on the Xcal for me.

I would use the notch more if I could adjust it more ......Being able to adjust the width of the notch would work better for me .....The way it is stock is too wide for my liking ...... I remember in an older thread that Critter use to notch as he would notch out pull tabs, and accounted for a certain percentage of gold that he would loose by doing so ..... It turned out that th gold that I found was in the range that he was notching out , so it would not have worked for me ..... It's up to the individual ......Jim

I never use notch unless I am making a log cabin, he he ha
