Exp II in the shallow surf...

Joe G

New member
I had some problems with the Exp II falsing all over the place in the shallow surf at the beach. I tightened up a small loop that I had near the coil and it seemed to improve but it still falsed too much.

My coil cover was siliconed and looks intact. In fact, as soon as I get out of the water the problem goes away.

I read that I should tie up the coil cable straight up the lower shaft a bit before I start coiling it around the shaft. (I just bought an X-1) Maybe that will help.

I tried lowering the sensitivity and even put it on auto sens. (maybe that does react fast enough?)

The only other thing I see is that I have my coil fairly loose so it flops flat to the ground all the time. Maybe it's floating or getting pushed up by the water and that's what's causing the problem?

How high can one ususally go on sensitivity in the surf? I usually run around 25 to 28 in the packed wet sand with no problem. Deep on fast off.

Thanks for your help.

Just to follow up...

I checked the connection at the coil(as someone suggested) and found that the nut was a bit loose. When I backed the nut off, I found some sand at the connection (although it looked like it was siliconed pretty well). I put a little more silicone around it and tightened up on the connection. After that, I put a little more silicone around the nut. That should seal it pretty good.

I took my coil cover off and while there wasn't any sand in it, I did notice a little water (after I rinsed off my coil) so, it wasn't sealed quite as well as I thought it was. I'll do that again before I hit the surf.

Just came back from a forum hunt in Michigan and had no problems in wet grass. We'll see what happens once I hit the beach again and the shallow surf.

Thanks for the help!
