Exp.11 and ferrous tones

I have a very old area that is very junky and tried out ferrous tones a couple of times got a few coins out of it but was woundering when in ferrous tones how do you decide to dig. Do you go by very slight coin sound or do you have to have a coin hit in two directions and are the sounds broken up in both directions. I'm having a hard time with this ferrous tones but i thinks its the way to go. Also would a certain type of headphones work better in ferrous tones Thanks John

Hey John,
I am not a ferrous tones expert because I learned using conduct tones. So when I get into an iron-rich site (nails) I switch to Ferrous Tones and wait for a consistent high-pitched signal that repeats on both right and left hand swing directions. Then I check the signal in Conduct Tones to see if it still has a nice tone (iron mask -15). If it still sounds good, I dig. My trash layer I collect in is about five inches deep. This method may not work for deeper trash layers because I think deeper rusty nails sound even more like silver as compared to a more shallow layer. It seems like the further you get away from a rusty nail, the more likely you get a false coin signal. The closer you get to the nail, the more likely you will get a null and be able to identify it as a nail. I know there are some Ferrous experts on this forum, and I hope they answer you!

You really need to work your targets.. ferrous mode is good in iron, but can get tricky in high non ferrous trash.. you get high tones on lots of junk.. main thing to rember is if your getting a high tone and the target reads bottom right its almost always trash(bottle cap or tin) Listen for the good high repeatable signals, circke the target while sweeping and see if you get a good solid tone from at least 2 angles of approach.. keep the sweep short and quick right above the target.. Most good targets give a fairly steady tone from at least one angle.. nearby trash will warble it up, so just try to keep the sweep over the target itself.. you dont need much motion for the explorer to react

I have been using ferrous exclusively the past month...iron mask bumped to -15 and I have noticed that the deeper the rusty nail, the more it sounds like sweet silver...pull it out of the hole and sweep it over the coil and it nulls out.
Guess I'll keep diggin em because the one I don't dig will be a walking liberty
