EXII PINPOINT

NEW TO EXII BUT NOT THE HOBBY. HAVING EXTREMELY GREAT SUCCESS ON THE BEACH ON OUTER BANKS AS WELL AS IN MD BUT ALAS A QUESTION. WHY IS IT I CAN PINPOINT THE 14" EXCELERATOR COIL RIGHT ON AND HAVE TERRIBLE TIMES WITH THE STOCK MINELAB.

It is interesting how far off from the center of the coil a target can be and we still get a nice solid hit. I consider that to be good as we can search an area with good coverage that is much larger than the physical size of the coil. When I get a hit I will take extra time to make sure I really have the target narrowed down to the approximate center of the coil. Then go to pinpoint and locate the exact center just as explained in the Owner's Manual. If you sweep the coil in pinpoint over the target from several direction the target it will shrink in size as there is an automatic circuit to aid in pinpointing. This is also explained in the Owner's Manual. I then like to go back to normal as the intensitivity of the target is stronger than in pinpoint. I will at times switch back and fort between normal and pinpoint.

That is the approach that I have grown to love. Many, if not most, Explorer II users think that using the Pinpoint mode is a waste of time. Try it. If you do not like it then do it some other way.

thanks for the input. I practiced more with the pinpoint and it seems much better. The excelarator 14 actually pinpoints very well without the pinpoint mode - but I guess all coils act different. thanks again.Wayne

Good info Cody indeed coming in from several directions gives one a more accurate pinpoint and most of the time pinpoint in Disc. as it seems to be stronger and of course its not all metal as the pinpoint is so a piece of junk next to the target won't confuse your pinpoint center..Indeed switching between Disc. and pinpoint is a valuable tool when pinpointing especially on iffies..

Dan,
One of the things I have learned from experience of digging too many nails and other trash is to go over the target to get the nice tone, then move the coil back while going side to side to find the start of the signal. Now that I know where it starts I will look at that spot and come at it at a differnt angle to see if it is still gives a signal in the same area. I may go all around it sometimes and maybe just 2 or 3 differnt angles as if it is only one way and nulls the other chance are it is a iron false, but doing this I have also pinpointed it too if it was a good signal, but will go to pinpoint too to make sure of the pinpoint. Now several times on the real iffy ones I will after I check it in the reg hunt mode, then pinpoint and recheck the signal after I have pinpointed too. If it is still iffy I will dig, but if it has proven to me the signal is moving and it is a false I will walk away.
