Excellent Internet Research Source

I must be behind....I just discovered Google Books. This is an excellent source for old out-of-print books that can be read online or can sometimes be downloaded to your PC as a .pdf file. This file type allows a full text search for keywords. Modern books are also present.

Even if you get a preview of the book. the site lists where you can buy a copy from used and new booksellers.

I placed a search as "Civil War Missouri" and I found a beautiful regimental history of the 1st Iowa infantry written in 1907. This book appears to be based upon a personal diary and is the kind of book that can be used to find virgin campsites.

For us, there are many old Civil War regimental histories, books on old weapons and maps.

Don't miss this site if you haven't already found it.

One of my recent finds at this site is the ORs and they are completely searchable. you can find all references to a location, unit, of personage and print it out.

Here is the location: Official Records

tried to go to the site but it says that i am not authorized to view the site. tried doing a google search on a small civil war battle in my county. problem with google searches is that unless it is a very uncommon name you get a hit for every person and town that has that name.

Not sure why you are not authorized (might be your browser...I use FireFox). Do a Google search on "Google Books" and at Google Books enter search for "War of the Rebellion" that should get you to ORs.

if i do asearch in the or's for either the battle of sutherland hill or the battle of panther creek it says there is nothing listed. which may be true. when i do the same search in google books it list every book that has the word battle or panther in it. you come up with alot of books but nothing you need.

chuck: try a google search : panther creek Kentucky Civil War found a number of references.
