Excelerator Coils

I am looking to purchase a new coil for my MXT.I am looking for a 5" or 6" coil.My question is should I go with one of the Excelerator coils or one of the standard type coils.

What do you consider a standard type coil? What kind of ground are you hunting in and how much trash are you expecting? EX coils are DD's for surgical separation of the trashiest of areas and if you are not working in that much trash, you might want to consider the White's 5.3 Conical for maximum depth. If you want some depth in a DD configuration, you might consider the 6X8 SEF. What coil is best for you only you can deside in your own ground. If your ground is highly mineralized, you might want to stick with the DD/SEF type otherwise the Conical coils are best in medium to lightly mineralized ground.

You didn't mention which coil(s) you have now, and also didn't mention the types of hunting you plan to use it for, or why you would like a smaller-than-stock coil. So, let me just guess that your MXT came with the 950 coil. This is a round-shaped concentric design. If you got the standard MXT 300 or the MXT Pro, then it might have come with the 12" round concentric coil so that would definitely mean you want a smaller-size search coil.

The Excelerator Coils can be a round shape or an elliptical shape and and are based on a Double-D internal winding configuration. The SEF Coils (also called 'Butterfly' due to their shape) are also a Double-D design but also called Double-0 (due to their outward appearance) so they also work similar to traditional D-D coils, but due to the larger size of the Tx and Rx windings they can get a little better depth than the traditional round or elliptical Excelerator or White's types of D-D designs.

I have used all but one of them, and some no longer listed. I liked the round 10" DD better than White's 950 round concentric or 10" D2 round Double-D, but I noticed that their larger coils seem to have been replaced by the SEF designs.

So, of their current offerings of those Bulgarian-made search coils, my favorites have been the following:

5" DD EXcelerator

8x6" SEF (Butterfly)

4.5x7" EXcelerator Elliptical

6" DD EXcelerator Search Coil

10x12" SEF (Butterfly)

I am personally biased toward smaller-than-stock coils because most of the sites I hunt are quite trashy, or I need to deal with dense brush, building rubble, and occasionally problem mineralized rocks. It took a bit of evaluation for me to move the newer 6X8" SEF up the list and I consider it just slightly better than the 4
