Excelerator Coil and Beach

I just recently moved to southern california and am interested in beach hunting. I have been using the 5" excelerator on my mxt and am so impressed I can't take it off. I hunted the beach an couple of times with it and it works great. I am impressed with the depth and coverage for such a small coil. Would it be to my advantage to get a 12.5 or 14" excelerator coil for this purpose. If anyone here has hunted the beach with one I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Have not hunted the beach with the 14 in but its about all I use---I liked it well enough that I ordered the 18 in. EXcelerator--Should be here Next Week-----(TIP) Reverse the bigger loops to put the weight more toward the back--Then shorten the rod up as much as possible--Shorten and slow down your Sweep speed to be able to use large loops longer---deathwind1

I used the 14 at Atlantic City New Jersey. I dug a dozen or so quarters that were as deep and deeper than an automax II pin pointer is long. I was completely blown away by this coil with the depth that it hit them quarters. It is a bit touchy to get smooth in the wet sand but runs like a dream in the dry sand and with a little tinkering will run smooth in the wet sand. I ran relic mode (it definately gets deeper than coin mode in sand) Gain on 10 dics at 2 trigger in center and a barely humming threshold. Those deep coins will not blast your ears but will definately give you a repeatable soft beep. I would guarantee if you got the 14 inch coil for the beaches you would never take it off. This thing is a monster in the sand. And despite it's large size it will still hit smaller targets , like little pieces of foil. It would definately be an advantage to have one.

Thanks Ray. I will get one on the way. I figured it was a good coil but wanted to here it from someone who had used one on the beach. Thanks for taking time to respond and for the info.

due to the appearance on that far end of the rod, the difference in weight & balance, and ther difference caused by the amount of ground signal the 14" will be dealing with.
I use my 14", but definitely not nearly as much as I do the excellent 5" Excelerator, to be sure! Most use has been in open grassy areas and plowed fields. I am going to be heading to our mineralized northern Oregon beaches in a few weeks and you can be sure I am going to have it mounted up. That is, once I get done around the dry-sand fire pits with the 5"! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
