I believe besides being mixed with iron(rust stain), it may have been sitting at an angle. But the lo-mid, mid-hi tone system is a major pain in the ass. They should have either stuck with either a 3 or 4 solid tone system. The split tones make working in trash tougher.
i.e. is the target chattering, or is it breaking back and forth across the disc segment? Is it close to the surface and you are hearing both sides of the target, or is it a pulltab? So far I am switching to AM to try to get a cleaner audio presentation of the target.
Software wise, it would only have taken a few lines of microprocessor code to offer you the ability to choose between several tone schemes. No hardware changes needed, just have customer hold down two buttons at once to enter to tone scheme select mode. We're talking about twenty minutes time in the hands of a competent coder. Maybe a running production change? Are you listening Fisher?

Bill,
What you described about the tones/target reading across a disc segment is (IMHO) what makes the Excel and C$ ID so well in trash and iron. That is, it is a function of the "real time" display of targets rather than some other machines that take a little longer look before they display the TID. Both methods work, but for trash huntin I prefer Fishers method!
Now for that nice drawn out tone that says coin in non trashy areas you could always get you a White's Pro XL... excellent ID and you can really cover some ground but no comparison in trash or iron. <img src="/metal/html/razz.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":razz"> <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
BTW nice find
