Excalibur with the new GG Amphibians Headphones

OldBeechnut

Well-known member
The latest in Headphones for the Minelab Excalibur..........Just finished up this Machine for one of the Divers here on Findmall, Carter NY, Remote PP with the New Gray Ghost Amphibians. Will have a video coming out this weekend on how to do your own GGA's for the Excalibur over on the Mod forum. . So far a few reviews have come in on how well they work and the big improvement over the stock Koss Yellows and the Original GGUW's.
Short cut out from a Review on one of the 4 sets out ..

My opinion is the Amphibians produce a more solid/richer sound in comp to the Koss HPs. The ability to turn the volume up is a nice feature when your underwater and your ear canals fill with water. The GG shells drain water much more quickly than the Koss HPs...I do a lot of up/down so its nice not having to pull the GG HP's away from my ears to assist drainage. They're comfortable, provide a nice seal around the ears. I also like the longer HP cable and that it's not coiled end-to-end cap. I like to be able to set my detector to the side and then reach over, grab just the coil and rescan the hole. The longer HP coil and its design allows me to do that unlike the stock Koss HP setup.

I like it. Especially the volume control and longer cord. Did you receive my PM I sent a couple of days ago? I would like to be on your waiting list. Hope you are enjoying your well deserved retirement. HH :minelab:

Extra cable will make a difference underwater, even the guys i know that snorkel end up hip mounting just so they can scan a hole when fanning. Where are the end caps coming from Joe to do the mod? Looks like you have him set up NICE. About time someone besides you took an interest in our headphone situation. I like that uncoiled cable.... makes it a lot easier to tie off and not as much pulling right at the connectors. Good fast drainage.... i like that. Is it a bigger drain hole? Normally out of the water we get a lot more wind noise. Guess ill have to save my pennies Joe and get my other machine tricked out.

Hi Dew.
I used Joe's GG Amphibian mod on my Excal last week at the ocean beach here in NY (pounding surf) and they were sweet...I mean super sweet. Two other Excal beach hunters who listened to them were impressed. The fit is fantastic and the wind noise is non existent. It may have to do with how we mounted the piezo inside the phones. They reside inside an enclosed sound box - that may keep the wind noise from interfering with the internal sounds???

The comfort level is night and day as compared to the stock Koss (or the Garrett blue) - they stay on your head exactly where you set them. After 5 hours in over 85 degree heat - they were as comfy as when I first put them on.

Although I didn't pull out any gold - the targets I did get were DEEP...very old coins. There were 4 other Excal guys walking the exact same lane and passing up these signals. I could swear that I was getting deeper targets than them - but that is all relative and could just be that I swung lower and slower...who knows???

Right now - I believe that Joe is making the end caps himself by hand...there was a guy selling end caps but he is MIA and has not responded to my emails...if the response to Joe's mod warrants it - then it may be time to make the investment in the molds...

Honestly Barry ..... anyone whose warranty has ran out.... first thing needs to change out those phones. The upgraded phones dont change the target sounds..... it just bring them louder and chrisper in disc. In PP.... getting that threshold down a bit and volume up is a must on those deep targets. I dont know about anyone else, but ive gotten a knot on my head from the yellows.... dang thing sticks out on the band so i like you added the cussion. Every pair of water headphones ive used regardless of company has had that wind issue from the drain holes. Nice that Joes didnt.... but he put some NICE gel pads on there too. If you snorkel i did find you have to have that smaller band on top or it kind of got in the way. As Max would say Barry.... i like um.

There definately is a depth increase with improved headphones. More so to me in PP just because of Pitch Hold. You hear the pitch hold change in disc where as you may or not not have gotten the weak threshold change in PP on the yellows. At the end of the day you arent nearly as drained from just trying to hear the weaker signals. There also is a difference between the blues and Xcal II IMO. The blues seem to be a little deep in PP and have condensed tones where as the Xcal II is deeper in disc have gives you a little more separated tones. Over the past 10 years i think coils and headphones have been the greats improvement to depth...... so maybe we are on a way with the water machines now. Pat on the back Barry and Joe.

Thanks Guys, Anyone can do this mod if you have a little soldering skills. And the cost is under 200.oo
if you do it or I do it for you, really both are the same cost.

Garrett Gray Ghost Amphibians...150.oo Extreme Detecting is the best price I have found.
Endcap .........................................22.oo Shipped from me or they were on ebay for 30.oo each, I think
2 Part Epoxy......................................4.oo lowes
2 pin connectors................................5.oo All Electronics shipped
Heyco Strain relief fitting ...................6.oo Mouser shipped
Shrink tubing
62/36/2 Silver bearing Solder

The real good think about this Mod, You can use them on your Brand New Excalibur without messing up the warranty,
any problems with the machine, just put the originals back on and minelabs will work on your machine. No Problems....

PM me any question, Thanks again guys...joe

Me too!

For anyone wanting to know..... it costs almost $250 for ML to replace the yellow phones. Add a pair of these and you have a back up pair.... or sell your yellows and recoup a few bucks. Joe does good work i have a pair of his skullies and once he puts the encaps on..... its a 10 min. job to install them. If i can do it anyone can. Once i get mine ill let you know what i think.

Received my Amphibians from Joe today. They are Awesome. I have bad hearing do to years in a factory. These headphones just scream out the sound if you want it full blast. Great job Joe, nice quality work. Don Coco Tyler Merrimack,NH

Hi everybody,
I have a question about GG Amphibia headphones connection. Inside of the main wire there are four thin wires (red, white, black, copper).
Which ones I should connect to my Excalibur II to make it work right?

Thank you

Red and black one side (solder together) and the other side white.....and it does not make any difference on which side you hook them too...they don't use the copper wire, not sure why they have it other then to make the cord stronger.....
