I agree,
There's nothing wrong or illegal about talking the truth .....Don't let others get screwed by whoever this guy is .....Let it be known who he is so that we don't have to go down the same road .... If you guys know something that the rest of us don't , somebody spill the beans ..... Nobody is out to hurt anyone , but we as a community should protect each other from faulty business practices ......Jim

come on John with the names of the company or person who repaired and switched your metal detector. I think if you got taken, the forum members should know so we do not get taken also by this person or company. I think Minelab is running out of time and excuses for their poor service and quality parts. Minelab users deserve better service than we are getting. It seems under the circumstances Minelab needs to hire more qualified repairman to solve the turnaround time, and make the customer happier. That is the name of good business, keep the buyers happy, so they will be repeat customers. Merry Christmas everyone, Good Hunting, Don

Well its probably going to Minelab Monday. I may open it up and remove the circuit boards and have a close up look at the Threshold/On switch. If I see numbers that I can trace to the manufacturer of the switch and obtain exact values for the switch and it looks within my skills, I may take a shot at replacement.

However even if I were successful, I have to ask myself what else might be bad that Minelab could discover during their repair and testing. Then again you read about units returned from Minelab and shortly thereafter sent back for further work.

What a mess, as someone said if you have a good Excalibur its golden, if not you will be on a first name basis with a Minelab technician.

otlew,
You are already ahead of the game knowing how to solder, and you are also ahead of the game having a part number for the pot ....If it's not all that hard to get to the connections , get the pot and give it a shot !!!..... You've already got the thing apart ..... If you screw it up, send it back to Minelab for repair as a last resort .... I'm not sure that I want someone going over my machine that has otherwise been fine, and going in and re-adjusting everything to what they see in the book and have the machine coming back to me NOTHING at all like I sent it in .... Too many guys have complained of their machines coming back with different tones and everything else .....I get tuned in to my machines and I know just by a crackle or pop what's going on under my coil ....I don't want that disturbed in any way !!.... Unless the fix is imposible , give it a shot ..... Good Luck whatever you decide ....Jim

I never found a number or brand name on the pot in order to find a replacement. I would have to unsolder the pot from the board and measure its electrical values and get its physical dimensions, to even get started. If you get the board too hot during the unsoldering you might lift a circuit trace off of the board, then you really have mess to deal with. So that part is somewhat risky, but doable. I will just send it in, if they lift a trace they can grab a new board out of stock, which may be what they do in most cases to begin with.

I will detect with my PI, we are far enough past the tourist season for a lot of the small steel/iron targets to have corroded away.

Our problem here is we are heavily sanded in. We need a good 30 MPH wind for a few days out of the south east to pound these beaches into submission. :please:
