Excalibur Threshold

Need a little help, hit a fresh water lake for the first time with my new excalibur. It seems that when I set threshold to a light hum, after I swing coil a couple of times it goes into a lower tone buzz. Am I doing something wrong. This first time this machine was used.

Threshold changes to the ID of the last target.
The detector saw something lower in conductivity than what would be represented by the default turn on tone threshold, which is a mid range conductivity. If you were not using discrimination and there was no target tone then it was iron.

I was in disc, but I am confused, do I have to reset threshold after each target hit? I sure hope not. I am sorry for these questions, but this machine is a bit differnet than what I have used before.

Thanks

Steve

Some guys reset the tone with their scoop to a high pitch. Have heard of others put a tack or coin in their shoe. Not necessary.
Like I said....the threshold reflects the conductivity of the last target. That's just how it works. The threshold changes every time you cross a target of different conductivity. The low iron buzz really bothers some people. It is the most often heard tone in a lot of places.
Get used to the different threshold tones if you can. The default turn on tone in either disc or all metal, which is the default all metal tone all the time, will seldom be heard after the first target in disc mode.

Thanks, I am understanding it better now, I quess I will get more used to it with time. I thought something was wrong at first. The area I was hunting today was pretty trashy, lots of bottle caps.

Thanks again.

No problem Steve.
A lot of people expect the Sov/Xcal to reset to the startup threshold, but they don't.
Get used to it then it will not bother you. Must admit that the iron tone is about the worst to get used to. Very irritating to many.

..put them on the ground next to each other and sweep over them and start to listen/learn what the sounds are telling you and how they change when going over different conductive targets.

In discrim mode, even at the lowest setting, small iron should null the detector. Bottle caps are nasty....some sound good. You will start to learn that they sound very 'washy/mushy' in sound. They are not sharp in sound, but it's really hard to tell since bottle caps can be made up of lots of different metals. There are lots of variations of bottle caps.

Thanks everyone who responded. I have been ground testing and playing with this machine, I know now it is just a different learning curve, than previous machines I have used. I will get it and hopefully soon be posting my water finds.
