Excalibur Threshold Recovery Question

firefour

New member
Hi,
At first I thought I had a problem with my new Excalibur. Using it for the first time on the beach in NJ I had to keep running the coil over the scoop to return the threshold back because I was getting a constant loud buzzing noise. My question is that when you get the loud buzzing noise is it much louder than the normal threshold sound volume? To me its quite loud and annoying. Is there a way to cut the volume down without running over the scoop or a nickle in your shoe? Thanks for your help.

Its pitch hold you are hearing.... thats the iron tone threshold which i hate as well. Pitch hold was put on the MLs and used a lot in the gold fields. It picked up very weak signals that you might miss and changed the threshold so the user could recheck the target. You could set your threshold volume lower.... but i wouldnt recommend it to low. I think we are stuck with the nickel and scoop thing unless you use PP mode. Anyone ever try setting their threshold mode in PP then switching over to disc? Some like a weak to almost no threshold they say they pick up smaller targets. Thou im having no problem. But dont like having to swing it over the scoop either.

The reason it seems louder for some is their hearing as with me I am deaf in the high tones so when I get iron that buzz is real loud for me too, but the other tones don't seem loud enough at times. This is where I see on the GT the silent search is nice and would be nice if they put that on the Excalibur's too as when set right I still hear the targets, then goes to a silent threshold so I don't have to listen to the iron buzz so long. I don't use it in area where I know weaker and deeper target can be found as I feel I may not hear that slight tone change of a different deep target in silent search. It was nice Minelab added that option on the GT so we have a choice and hope they will on the Excal some day too.

Several have posted over the years and have answered this very same question. While it may be annoying it is part of the game! If this was as easy as turn on and point me to the gold everyone would do it! Outside influences such as a nickle on your boot can also be a problematic too! The 10 tornado coil is a large coil on a power full detector. Manufacturers of larger coils recommend you take your belt buckle off and loose change from your pockets when detecting. While you may not hear the outside influences they affect the detectors performance by having to make compensations for them. Try this at home find a clean non electrical spot with out targets and put a gold ring down and listen to it. Then place a piece of iron near it or any other metal and listen to the change that affects that same gold ring tone. I you have a detector with a meter even better yet look at the numbers! To also see the influence your scoop has on that same detector go to PP and carry you scoop where you normally do. If you hear that threshold raise a bit as you approach it, its doing that same in discriminate you just don't hear it,the detector working hard to stop that influence in discriminate. So where do you keep that giant piece of metal required to dig 18 inches on the beach? One would like to shoulder it but its get to be a pain lowering it to silence the null and errrrr that comes from iron target! So carrying it in your hand opposite the detector is the option I chose. I am right handed so my swings are only in front and right of my right foot and not a complete ark as this would have the scoop in the way. As a note here I rarely detect in discriminate any longer. Reasons are I have learned that PP gives so much more information than Discrimination, its deeper, it allows for threshold breaks I don't hear in discrimination. It shows size and shape before I dig. And I don't have to listen too the Errrrr after the iron, and I can carry my scoop on my shoulder! This was not an easy thing to do and it came at a long learning process and lots of digging trash. But my finds proved to me it was well worth it! Low and slow!
