Excalibur/Threshold constantly changes tone/pitch/volume

Excalibur/Threshold constantly changes tone/pitch/volume

Any advice?
It seems to me that the Threshold Adjust must be broken since it will not shut off the Excalibur.
I must instead disconnect the battery pod.

Also, the tonal changes seem in part due to headphone wires being loose inside the headset.

What I am wondering is whether or not this will be worth sending in to Minelab?

I have heard the repairs will be astronomical in cost.

This unit is being borrowed from a friend and was purchased as a demo from KellyCo

Any advice or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

HI as for the threshold on/off knob it sounds like its loose, you can tighten it by popping off yellow cap "theres a 1/4 nut" underneath but BE CAREFULL because if you over tighten it will crack good luck hh

It sounds like your Excalibur has seen better days. It also sounds like your problems are relatively minor. I would give Minelab a call and inquire as to what the approximate cost would be. Doesn't sound like it should be too much to me. Not too much to warrant scrapping a $1000 metal detector. And it doesn't sound very usable as it is now...

I am not sure how old your unit is, but I bought mine in 1997 and I have had it to minelab for a check up/coil upgrade ( bigger coil). Then this year I had them take the bigger coil off and put the smaller one back on. This time while it was in they told me that I needed to Replace my headphones as there was a leak in them.
To switch my coil back over and replace the headphones was a lot cheaper than to replace the whole thing. I would sure call them and get an idea of repair.

THANKS for your Advice everyone...

I am packing up the Excalibur 800 to send in to Minelab for repairs.

PS: Don't use silicone sealer around the coil cover unless you want to spend hours on end trying to figure out how to remove it.

Hello,

I am sure you have this resolved by now but since mine is in the shop for the same reason, I figured I toss in my 2 cents.

My Threshold pot was actually broke. I would go past off and the machine would go crazy. It worked for a bit then it totally went. I had the same thing happen with another pot. To me, this is the biggest weakness in the Excalibur design I have seen. The pots they use do not seem to be of a good quality and the knobs on them become loose and can not be tightened. If the wanted to do things right, they would put better pots in the machines, better knobs, and add stops so the pots could not be taken outside their ranges.

with that said, Minelab Las Vegas made the repairs (under warrenty) both times and did it in a timely fashion.

I had the same problem with the knobs on my Excalibur, they'd always slip. Someone on this forum told me to go to Radio Shack. They had a knob that would work. I did and that solved the knob problem.
