Excalibur Straight Shaft

Hello Everyone,

I am new to posting on the forum, but have enjoyed reading the many strings.

I know this question has been best to death, but besides the improved swinging of the Excalibur straight shaft, what are the advantages of the "over/under mount" and the "behind the elbow mount"? Are the controls harder to reach on the behind the elbow type shaft?

Thanks for you help/advice in advance. I just received my new Ecal II and will be hitting the Southern California Beaches this weekend.....I can hardly wait:bouncy:

the S style shafts were very awkward and tires us fast, those are the only reasons for me, since the control box is set once in awhile.
If using a meter then must be placed in field of vision. But have not switched yet only guessing. oj

I'M curious on this one also........seems that 25% hip mount .....25% chest mount ......The other 10% hip mount with the pods on there rear end ? ..........I was at my local beach last weekend and saw two excal hunters with the long shaft with the pods behind the elbow set up with knob guards ......... someone here bought the long shaft with the over/under setup and complained it was still heavy ?

gday
i am a chest mount beach pirate :)
only to reduce weight as i have cactus back plus i am not a muscly guy ...and it works brilliantly - i like the easy access to the controls on my chest
if you go this way (or hip ) be sure to get a harness (like pluggers one) with a failsafe system so as to not put pressure on the black wires

and have just got a 2 piece straight for the excal after using the original s shaft for a couple of months
i have worked out i will have better swing control and less wrist pain ...its not essential but makes it better
i think that i will notice the difference when swinging in the deeper water and for long periods without stopping
good luck:thumbup:

If you mount on a shaft it is all about balance. If you read the AT Pro forum you can see what a device galled the Gizmo did for the ergonomics of that detector. And we are only talking adding three inches with the Gizmo. The over under style in my opinion does nothing for the distribution of weight. A nice clever design, but still is not an ergonomic design. It is all about getting the weight of the Excalibur behind the cuff. The weight then seems to help you hold the coil just above the ground instead of you holding the coil and Excalibur above the ground.

The best solution I have found is Plugger's chest harness at Indian Nation. The coil only on the shaft is very lite. The controls are very accessible on the Excalibur compared to a hip mount. Hip mounts people end up putting the unit behind them. It is just in the way with swinging and scooping on your hip.Who wants to bang around their detector?

I have the Pluggers straight shaft with the controls mounted behind the elbow. Really like the balance of this set up. Works great for me. Does make the detector alot longer, but that hasn't been a problem for me.

I also use the behind the elbow and it makes all the difference in the world. I did add a 6 inch piece of corragated cable shield on my headphone cable because of the sharp bend where the headphone cable comes out of the control pod. I just did not like the sharp bend where the cable moves every time you swing. You might want to put an extra coil bolt in one of the open holes. Good luck with your choice. HH :minelab:

I use the behind elbow to when not chest mounting, only I reverse the pod so that the headphone wire comes straight up and no pulling or sharp bends, it also makes the disc/pinpoint switch easy to reach as its the closest to hand and the discrimination farthest away that i never use

still using the factory s pole. Im not crazy about it but dont I dont get to go out in the water nearly as much as I land hunt. I would eventually like to get a straight shaft though, but,,,I think Im waiting for the Excal to pay for itself till I put any money into it.
