Excalibur Repair

I just sent the Excal in for the second time in a year for the same problem. It's erratic when you shake the coil No Sand in the cover. I can hold all the cables still and shake the coil and it goes crazy. I worked pretty hard to isolate where it was coming from.
Called Minelab today and they said there is a 10 day turaround time. I'll experience their customer service first hand and will keep all informed as there has been some general concern about their customer service expressed on the Minelab forums. I don't know what their repair warranty is but I suspect it's much, less than the year it took to go South again.
Cost me $17.71 for UPS with $1K insurance. I'll track the bugger and keep all informed what I experience and then you can come to your own conclusion. It's getting closer to Tigershark time. Hurts to say that as I am a strong supporter,of the ML Technology. However, that's only part of the stick that measures a products worth...Jim

Grumpy...Sent one of mine in for repair (power cable). I was shocked when I called them 2 days after they recieved it, to find out that it was fixed and being shipped out the next day. Last year, the same problem took 8 weeks. Sounds like they got more techs working there now. The longest wait-was the week it took for UPS to get it back.

I just sent my Excal in yesterday.. USPS Priority Mail $1K insurance $32.00.... You did good...

This will be the second time it's been in for the same issue... Erratic, No Threshold, Volume ranging from High to low... Last time they replaced everything MB,Coil, Battery, Gaskets etc..

I was told that they are doing rather well with a 1 week turnaround time....

I too will keep you posted..

Good score with $17.00 w/ Insurance.... I wanted mine to arrive faster I guess..

When the repair people gave up doing Mods it was to improve their response time on repairs.

Looks like it worked!

GL&HH Friends,

Well why do these things break down so much, you spend $1300 and you would think that Minelab could improve the design. Mine again, for about the 4th time has had a wire inside break, this is crazy. I also have to say when it has been shipped off for repairs it has taken more than a month to get it back.

Just put my Partners Excal II together he got from Joe D. I like the lighting rod that was included, looks nice ..But when I turn the excal on the threshold is blaring, turn it off and back on it is fine {Adjustable}. It does this about every 3 or 4 times if you turn it on, then off. It is not adjustable when it is blaring...In Am & Disc.....Not a good sign, my 8 & 10 Excal do not do that. Going to charge the battery and give it another shot Thursday, I want to do a side by side with it to see if there is any performance difference, while I have it. Just hope he does not have to send it back, he would be very disappointed. Any Ideas on this, sure is not normal ? Anything like this with yours? Looks too me like a GoBack..Thanks Obn

Is the battery charged?

Generally it is necessary to charge one when it is new.

When it gets low the way you know is by the crazy loud signals you start getting!

Have several Excal batteries, The one I used on the Excal II, I checked it in the old excals.......... works fine. Just tried a few others , One was fine, threshold was normal, 2 others same erratic threshold..But they work in the Old Excals??...Maybe the new excals require a certain Voltage.... Charging the New Battery that came with the Excal II, will try it Thursday. Thanks Again........Obn

Here's another one. My friend got a new Excal yesterday. He charged the batteries and it won't turn on. It's on the way to Las Vegas. Hope mine beats his to the technician. His is new under warranty and by all rights his should be serviced before mine.

Anyone else think it might be a good idea to start a thread listing the problems we are having with our Excals and see if there isn't a pattern. I wonder if it's only a few noisy ones, like me, or if there is something seriously going south with the Excal. Data would be better than personal experiences....Jim

If this get's out of hand, I will delete it.
I can feel for you all having problems with your detectors, but I am not going to let this turn into a detector bashing thread. I believe you made your point. If any feel the need to continue this, please post it on the Feed Back Forum.
Do everyone a favor, let them see it also.

you took the words right out of my mouth JW, that would have been my first move, Would have probably got another one right off

With a fully charge battery the Excal II from JoeD works great, {Maybe the new excals have little tolarance for lower voltage then the Old ones?} Took both Old & New to the wet sand, Video on...And the New Excal II seems to have the edge, but will need more side by sides. Anyway, Partner Picked his up today and with the Lighting Rod, It looks Hot!....Now I have to line up a few more Volunteers........... Thanks Cj & VBMax for the feedback on the battery.....Obn
