Excalibur Radio Shack Knob Mod

Well, the wasn't anything WRONG with my knobs. But I can see where the yellow caps coming out would be an inevitability and the nuts that hold them on don't seem as positively securing as the set-screws in the new knobs. And the new knobs are one-piece, so no caps to lose. And they are maybe a little more like the optimal size. So I did it. I'll keep the old ones, just in case I ever need them.

Here are the original knobs, followed by the knobs from Radio Shack...I think they were $1.79 per 2-pack...and then the new knobs, in place.

I think if someone was to examine your blood under a microscope they'd discover your corpuscles would be shaped like little metal detectors. It was only yesterday when the Radio Shack part number was posted and "Bang" there you are... photos and all. The new knobs look great BTW!

The only thing I might be worried about would be the set screws rusting when exposed to salt water. I doubt they're stainless. Eventually they could rust to a point where they will crumble under the strain of the allen wrench.

Love the flags as well... :usaflag: nice touch!

Yeah, I thought about that. But the screws look to be brass, so maybe not a problem. We'll see. Oh, and the aren't Allens, they're little flat heads. But they tighten up well and hold the knobs steady without much torque. Time will tell...

The flags are the cats butt, huh?

...that it was raining at lunch today and since I couldn't take my Explorer II to the bullet and button field across from my work I decided to take a quick trip to the Radio Shack and see if they had the knobs. They did, so being the "Instant gratification" type that I am, I bought them. Then when I got home I couldn't do anything else until I got them on. :)

I'm afraid I have to admit I'm the same way. When I get something new, no matter how big or how small... if its something of interest to me I have to get right at it as soon as I have my first moment of free time. Six bucks worth of plastic knobs would be no exception.

Yep... when I first saw the flags on your Excal I simply assumed it was because your detector was one of the newer generation models (only being a few months old). They looked so original I didn't even stop to think about Minelabs country of origin. They actually look like they were made for that specific application! Very cool!
