Excalibur problem

Frank(FL)

New member
I was out hunting when my Excalibur for about 30 min when it just started making a tone all the time. Checked for sand in coil (clean) checked all connectors (good) I did get rid of the problem after I got home by putting on the extra battery pack. I changed between the 2 packs and when I used the Na Ca pack it all ways had a tone no matter how I set the knobs. Is this a normal thing to see if the batteries are low? I am now charging the Ni ca pack for the day and we will see if it works . Has any one else seen this before. OK I just re read the manual again and it dose say that the Threshold will become unstable with a flat battery. I will up date after I charge it up.

when the pack is flat the threshold rises and is uncontrolable, its normal. Some give off a high pitch shrill every 30 seconds or so beorehand to let you know its almost done. If its an old nicad pack it may may not be good even after an all night charge. If you charge the battery and leave it for a couple of weeks it will self discharge, always charge the night before.

Thanks, I did check the voltage on the nicad and it was reading 13.4 volts after 3 hrs of charging. I normal charge it for13 hrs. As a side note the Alkaline pack reads 12.4 volts. I will give the nicad a good charge and see what happens. I am sure it was the battery pack was low or going bad time will tell.

If you hook up a volt meter to the battery while it's on the dumb Minelab charger you can monitor the pack and see when it's peaked. Note the voltage it's at. Come back an hour later and if it's higher then leave it charging. Check again an hour later and keep it going so long as the voltage is higher than it was last time an hour ago. When the voltage stays the same an hour later or has dropped then you know it's reached it's peak. Good/easy way to see when the pack is peaked when a charger doesn't have an automatic cutoff.

I had a time when my older batteries would only last a half hour or less. .There is a company that will put new batteries in your old rechargeable battery pod. I looked it up on the net (Batteries Plus) and now I have a rechargeable battery pod that has new batteries in it that work with the old battery charger.
