excalibur problem

New member
Hi there, I recently purchased a Excalibur 2 from a lady that bought it only a year ago. great condition looks new. i went out to give it a try, worked fine for about two weeks on my last out the machine could not maintain a steady buzz. the buzz on pinpoint is intermittent and discriminate just goes on given off all the sounds, this is without moving the detector at all. on occasion it steady's itself but goes right back to the erratic pattern. the detector when passed over large metal gives off it`s signal and with smaller objects like rings it reacts mixing the sound with the erratic pattern. I`am new to metal detecting and i have no idea whats wrong. please help.

Start by cleaning out under your coil cover. Next make SURE your battery is fully charged. If that don't help then put sensitivity on auto and turn all knobs back to original positions check battery connections, coil and other connections. You could be close to underground electric cables or overhead as well creating to much EMI in that area. Sounds like mine when battery gets low. Hope this helps. Good Luck. HH :minelab:

thanks for the quick response, I`ll be checking these areas. one thing that i did last time before going out was, i put a small silicone bead on the edge of the yellow cover so that the sand would not get inside. because i noticed that the yellow cover was letting sand in threw the inside edge. The second area that you guys suggest could be the problem too, the first owner had mentioned that the battery was not charged for over 9 months. because i have no idea, how long should the battery be charged, i gave it a overnight charge and notice the battery warn. I have contacted someone that is going to bring his new battery to eliminate that possibility. once again thanks I`ll get back .

Sounds like a LOW BATTERY Problem!! You should read the Owners Manual to see HOW LONG the charging period is for your PARTICULAR Battery!! The newer batteries are Nimh Batteries and I believe they have a longer CHARGING TIME Period!! Otherwise, you should charge it for 14hrs., when the battery SIGNALS, that it
is LOW!! Most IMPORTANTLY, read your OWNERS MANUAL at least TWICE, and it will save you ALOT of HEADACHES!! Hope this helps, hh, Les Robinson

Get rid of that coil cover. Get yourself some pickup truck bed paint.....preferably the Rustoleum pickup truck bed paint and give it two or three good coats of paint. Don't use it for a day in order to let it dry nice and hard.

The coil covers even with caulk around the edge will still for some strange reason allow sand and dirt to get under the cover causing falsing and all kinds of erratic behavior. Once it is painted with truck bed paint, you will never have to worry about dirt under the cover again.

And the battery also could be causing problems. I have had brand new batteries go bad because of manufacturing defects and it caused all kinds of problems. So even new batteries may be bad.

If you post the rest of your settings it might help, could be too much sensitivity, too high a threshold or any number of reasons

ok, my settings are: thre. at 2o `clok - vol at 3o`clock - sen at auto - discr. at 6. I have changed settings while testing with no progress. I`am a bit more worried now, because i checked with a new battery and there was no change, so i pulled off the coil cover and found lots of sand cleaned it well and it still does the same. running out of options i inspected all over found a small nick on the cable that goes down to the coil, but nothing that goes beyond the surface of the cable. the person that lend me the battery tells me that i`am probably going have send it to the service center without warranty. If i have no more options what does it cost and were would i send it. thanks for all the responses site is great.

Turn the machine on put on the headphones and shake all your connections. If you cannot isolate the problem send it to Minelab USA Inc 871Grier Drive Suite B1 Las Vegas, Nevada 89119. Call 1-702-891-8809 first and explain your problem. If you can fax their # is 1-702-891-8810. You have gotten some excellent advice on the forum but sometimes they have to go in. Sorry.

Try
disc mode
volume 80-90%
threshold just enough to know its there
sens 12 oclock or less
Disc 0 or 1 on excali2 (having your disc on 6 maybe the objects you are trying are cutting in and out hence the mixing)
then as hershy1 says wobble all cables

If that doesn't sort it sounds like a minelab job

And don't be anywhere near a house or power lines when testing it. You might just be picking up a bunch of noise. If it's real noisy, like in your garage, even Auto will have trouble with keeping steady. When I'm testing targets in the garage I mostly crank the sensitivity all the way down to keep it the most stable.

I put silicone sealer on my coil covers only to find that the black sand still got into the area between the coil and the coil cover. I put it on the coils real careful, let it set up for three days and over the years it still got in there.
HH:detecting:

Did you try running it in Threshold- Off, Volume-on, Sensitivity-Auto, Discrimination-0

I know one year I had some problems until I Turned everything but volume counter-clockwise. Then she purred like a kitten.

Sorry if you have to send it in, but you will have a great detector when she gets back.

OK, the last time i charged, i charged without the battery completely out, so, i ran the battery dry, took 12hours, then gave it a full charge of 14hours. Noticed a difference in pinpoint, the hum was stable, in discriminate still going nuts. got a person to bring his new exca 2, his was doing the same, we concluded that the area was probably highly saturated with frequencies. going to take both detectors out to the beach this week. i`ll keep you up to what happens.

I'm sure it's RF noise. The machine will get HIGHLY unstable even if you crank it way down sometimes if there is any nearby. In my garage sometimes AUTO works, sometimes the lowest manual works, and some times nothing works on my GT.
