Excalibur - pinpointing tips?

GotSilver?

New member
Guys - you all have the best advice thanks! Does anyone have any good pinpointing tips/strategies for the Excalibur. I have the 10" coil and could use some help. Thank you...

If you mean water hunting I don't use an Xcal but I can offer a few tips I think...First, I think many (?) Xcal guys don't like to switch from disc to PP mode just for fear of the POT switch problems these machines can be prone to. For that reason, I think some just PP in discriminate if they are hunting in that mode for less wear and tear. I know I only use discriminate mode to PP on my GT even though I wired up a remote PP switch on it, because I just prefer doing it in discriminate myself.

Related to that, here's a tip I think I can offer if you are water hunting. Even on land I don't use the center of the coil. On land I wiggle the coil's tip forward until I just begin to hear the target and then it's right at the edge of the coil. In the water hunting with my GT, I reverse that and use the tail of the coil. I'll wiggle it backwards until I just start to hear the target. Then I stick my big toe right on the edge of the back of the coil, and then I just slide my scoop down along my foot at an angle pointing at my big toe. Once done, I move the coil all the way to my left to get it out of the way (and to act as a balance point if I need it in an emergency), and then go ahead and scoop the target. Works like a charm for me when water hunting. Tip on land for me and tail in the water for me.

The guys who prefer using the center of the coil I'm sure will chime in with how to do that. Ashamed to admit it but I'm still learning that on the Sovereign. Actually I just never try enough to get into practice with it on the GT. I used the center on my Explorers all the time and never did very well, but I hear it's a good bit better on the Sovereign (at least compared to the old Explorer models, as I know the SE Pro has a much more wicked pinpoint due to software enhancements than the older Explorers did).

If you are starting out......... locate the target, wiggle the coil backward until its at the tip of your coil, put you foot at the back of your coil and put your scoop there. Once you learn to visulize the target in the water you can pretty well just put the scoop behind the target and dig it. Once you learn the machine you will be able to know the size of the target as well as depth. DD coils take a little getting used to especially in the water where you cant see your feet. Ill just say i have a 9 1/2 X 11 1/2 scoop ...... it helps to have the right scoop out there. Also there are what i call FLOATERS such as coins and pull tabs that move around in the hole..... if you have say an RTG aluminum scoop that is completely enclosed these targets tend to move out as the scoop fills with sand. What you will also notice after a couple of scoops in the oat meal that a target moves back into the center of the hole.

Great post by dewcon with the added insight on "floaters".

I've got the 10 inch coil too. One thing that took me a little while to get used to was, in discrimination mode, the Excalibur has a delay in response to a target. I'd visualize the target at one point sweeping left to right and then visualize the target inches to the left of the first point on the right to left sweep; even with the slow sweeps in the water. Wiggling the coil helps and as you get more time on the detector, you get better at visualizing the true target location. If you are in all metal mode, there is not the delay and target location is easier.

I had a quarter give me a hard time a few weeks ago. By hard time, I mean I started swearing out loud without knowing it...turned around an realized I had people looking at me. Chuckling. Glad they thought it was funny. 20 minutes. 1 quarter. Roar. Usually 1 scoop. It musta been a floater. lmao. HH an GL. -Joe

Dewcon is right on with the wiggle method. Only thing I might suggest is get yourself the biggest scoop you can handle. I put a piece of aluminum gutter guard in the bottom of mine to catch ear rings and small stuff. When that sweet low growl comes you don't want to lose it. Good luck and HH :minelab:

You are 100 percent correct on a big scoop hershey....... mine is 9 1/2 by 11 1/2 with 1/4 holes SS. I loose almost nothing thur the scoop.... except sand. But this scoop isnt for every area just because it fills with shells or rocks in those areas..... you just have to know how to dig a target and if you dont see it in your partically filled scoop, dump it and then its easier to pick it up again.

Great advice guys....like always. I'm currently using the SS 6.5 Stealth....although easier to handle, of course, than the 8...it does take a few scoops sometimes to get the item. You all know that when "a few scoops" are required you get some "floaters"...that's no fun. So...so, I think I'll exchange the 6.5 for the 8 and hopefully enjoy more "first scoop" recoveries!!! Thank you all...
