Excalibur Operation

Tried my new/used Excalibur a few times. I got a nice threshold and would start searching and suddenly the threshold tone would go to a deep growl. I think it saw iron. If I moved the coil towards my aluminum scoop, it would reset the tone to the nice high tone. I did find things with it and think I know the clear beep of a 'good' target, but am curious about the deep growl. With other detectors I've used the low tone is iron, but after removing it from the area the detector resets to the 'normal' threshold tone. The excalibur didn't do that. Ideas on what's going on?

It should return to the normal tone after a little while, it's just not real fast to do that, and it actually blanks when you hit iron....

Here's one of mine, from the archives. Do this and you will find the gold.

OK, lets try something and if this does not calm her down, then I surrender..........

Set to Disc, Volume wide open, Discrimination on 1, Sensitivity on 12 noon(Auto sucks-you lose depth in Auto-been there done that), or pointing towards the coil, savvy? Set the Threshold to barely audible, then down a little lower, to just not aubible. If the threshold tone appears through the headphones, then you may still be up too high. This should smooth out the operation and YOU WILL signal ALL non-ferrous targets. You will no longer hear the iron nulls though. DIG ALL repeatable signals, no matter how nasty they seem to you. If you are a fast swinger, then you WILL have to change your style, as the Excal does not like fast swingers. Excal likes level, low and slow. Love her and she'll love you too. There you have it, the Excal recipe for success. Try it and see if you don't agree.

This all sound normal with the Sovereign or Excalibur as it will see all the targets in the ground. The null is a disc target or iron and more than likely iron it is seeing. Now with the Excalibur and the Sovereign the threshold tone will change to the last target it see until it sees the next target and in your case when it null of iron the threshold will come back as a growl and when it sees the next target the threshold will change unless it is iron again and it will null and come back as a growl sound. For many of us that like a threshold this is nice and we can tell if we are going to fast and and with the nulls we just may hear a little positive signal of a good target to check out.

It is a different detector than most and once you have used it for a while you will see how all these tones and nulls will help you get the good targets others have missed.

Good luck!!

Floridabill..I waited a long time and the low growl never reset. Time didn't seem to affect a change. Gulfhunter...I used those setting from the gitgo. I have been reading here for awhile and even marked those settings on the unit with a permanent marker before I left for the saltwater. Rick(ND) [Where in ND does one water hunt?] I think I understand what you said and that clears it up lots.
So you all are saying, I hope, that's the nature of the beast? OK! Since mine is used I wanted to check out and see if it needed a trip to the hospital.
Thanks!! Sure helps to have Pros help out!

I too have had this same problem with the ex cal. two and I have never got a straight answer...THANK YOU, THANK YOU

As long as you can reset the threshold with your scoop the Excal is working properly,if the threshold does not return nice and high I would be guessing that you haven't passed the coil over something that should be dug.

GL/HH

Mine does the same thing when I swing over iron, nulls the threshoud buzz, and I just swing past my scoop to reset it. No other troubles.

I LIKE NOT HAVING A THRESHOLE ,ITS HARD TO CHANGE ALL OF MY OTHER DETECTORS I HAD TO HAVE A THRESHOLE IT BUG THE HELL OUT OF ME,IM LOVING MY MINE LAB !!!!!!
THANKS TO ALL,:jump: AND THE GOTO GUY

It is really not necessary to reset the threshold as it will change by itself when it senses another metal object.

By the way, I have decided to get myself an Excalibur II to go along with my GT. Now, all I have to do is move back to Florida.:detecting:
