Excalibur Kept Me Busy Last Night!

Or this morning, I should say.

Went down to the beach for the 1:15 AM low tide. Got there at 11:30 PM and hunted until 4:30 AM. After a slow start to the weekend, the targets are definitely popping now. And as you can see from the number of nickels and the various jewelry, the Excal was hot on the scent. Wound up with 5 rings...3 gold, 1 silver, 1 mood. The one with the 3 diamonds in it is 10K and the other two are 14K. The nice comfort band is thick and hefty and says "14K, Camelot" on it.

I have to say, I'm pretty pleased. I hope today is another killer beach day like yesterday was...next hunt should be a good one too. HH!

Excellent, Mike! 4th of July's haven't been very fruitful around here for me, but I hope to take a crack at it as the crowd starts disappearing later in the afternoon. The heat will still be annoying by then, but sure beats the furnace at noon. At 3am this morning it was still 83 freakin' degrees here! Just put out our larger flag that always goes up on the 4th, and it's not budging a millimeter. You'd think that might bode well for some water hunting, but it looks fairly choppy out there, judging by the trusty Boardwalk cam. Hope you and everyone else gets plenty today and tomorrow!

Nice to meet you mike, and all the rest of you I met over the last couple of weeks. Congrats. gold eluded me all night. two silvers. Did you pull that last gold right after I met you? Again, nice stuff.

Nice finds!

Do the police every give you a hard time? Where I live they will ask you to leave the beach if it's later than 10 PM. I like the idea of night hunting because it would be a lot cooler. Would have to stay out of the water to avoid sharks though. ~John

Yeah, I hit a spot down in the low number streets where there were a lot of deep quarters and nickels coming up. I'd already been at it for almost 4 hours and was about to quit and then was hitting it pretty regular so I kept working it.

See you out there!

Well, there were a good number that I didn't dig. Only when I was positive though. I always hate doing that, because I have had a couple of fatty gold rings that almost mimmicked a zinc. But when the sound was classic zinc I was letting a few go.

That's some nice finds! Are you planning on going again the next couple of nights? I'm off Tuesday, and am already thinking of a few beaches to get on to.

No, never at all. There are people out there swimming, walking, sleeping, doing the wild thing, etc., etc. pretty much alll hours of the night, so what's a metal detectorist bothering? In fact, this is the first summer I've been hunting that I actually saw a uniformed officer "walking a beat" on the surflane at 1 AM the other night. Walked right by me, didn't give me a second thought. There were several groups of people I came across last night between bar closing at 2 AM and the time I left at 4:30 that were swimming, even in shoulder deep water. It was pretty rough too. And some say I'm nuts, detecting that late.

Well, today is looking like another blowout beach day as far as the weather...sunny, beautiful. So I think tonight's 2 AM low tide is going to be a great hunt. And I have to work tomorrow. So...I've decided I'm going to be a tired puppy at work tomorrow. I'll get some extra shuteye today and I'll be there from probably midnight to 5 AM, come home, get coffee, shower, eat breakfast and go to work. Nuts? Maybe, but I gotta do it. The 4th of july comes but once a year. As Sam Elliot (playing "Wade Garrett") said in the movie "Roadhouse", "I'll get all the sleep I need when I'm dead." :D

Well good luck to you. I just can't do that "day detecting" thing...no way. Too many people out there to trip over, questions, smart asses, kids, trying to detect AROUND people...give me a cool breeze and free reign in the surflane any day. I LOVE night hunting the beach. And for me, it's MUCH more productive. Look at yesterday...to those who went out for the daytime low tide, they were missing targets everywhere due to the throngs of people. Come down for the night low tide and you can get much better coverage, nobody to get in the way.

 Actually, I did change right there at the beach. I was wearing underwear and shorts as opposed to my normal swimming trunks and at one point when I was hunting I had a big wave come up on me and fill my shorts with sand. I always bring a change of clothes in case I get too wet because I like to rollerblade the boardwalk when I get done detecting. Didn't do that last night though, because I ran into overtime on the detecting. When the hits are coming, you gotta keep swinging!

Yeah, it was a good night...for sure. But as we all know, they aren't ALL like that. I get skunked too. I won't be surprised if tonight doesn't turn out as well. But it COULD, and that's enough to make it a "Go" for me. :)
