Excalibur Issues

Hey All,

I posted this to TreasureNet but am also a part of this community and wanted to post it here as well in hopes of getting advice.

As some of you may or may not know, I recently got myself an original Excalibur (with the horseshoe coil). I got some helpful suggestions on setting it up and went out today to do some beach detecting. Almost immediately I started finding coins. Pretty cool, (although all modern). But here's where the problems start...

I'm constantly having to play with the Threshold because it seems to raise in volume. I know that the Threshold should be set so that it is barely audible. It is. As I detect the Threshold seems to go up and I find myself constantly making minor adjustments. This may be normal as conditions and landscapes change as you walk, or the knobs just may be hitting against my jacket, but I am unaware of it. So, the first question... Is it normal to have to constantly tweak the Threshold?

Here's another volume issue (more to come too), whenever I turn the Excalibur on or off, there is a huge audio pop - and it's damn painful. Now, you'd think it would be easy to remember that I have my headphones on, but sometimes I get caught up in what I'm doing and just want to hear silence, (again, the Threshold issue mentioned above), so I just click it off. Also sometimes I want to get going and put my headphones on but do not turn on the Excalibur until I get to the place I want to begin. Is this normal - the pop, not my headphone habits?

Also every minute or so there is a loud sweeping sound as if I found a target. Is this possibly the capacitor discharging? I think I have heard this sound while watching Old Beechnut's videos on YouTube.

And now the reason I am screwed...

As I mentioned I have to make fine tweaks to my Threshold to make it barely audible. I did this on my initial outing with the Excalibur. Today about an hour in to hunting, the Threshold could no longer be adjusted. It stayed on consistently and was quite loud. Having found items and enjoying my day, I continued on. It was annoying but I did not want to stop. And now....

...and now, I am having a hard time hearing. Talk about the ultimate tinnitus. This was pure stupidity on my part. You'd think after being in the music industry for 20 years playing out live and in the studio that I would be more aware/concerned with my hearing. Damn. I sure hope it goes away.

Could the Threshold/Volume issue today possibly be a sign that the batteries need to be recharged? I'm going to do it anyway and will find out shortly, but thought I would throw it out there. I was told that one way to know that the batteries are getting low is that the machine will start acting intermittently.

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

PS: An update to this. I just turned on the Excalibur and the Threshold knob was working fine once more. This makes me believe that either sand got into it today (I cleaned it off with fresh water when I was done), or it is just another sign that the batteries need to be charged.

I can help with one issue. Get rid of that dang coil cover and get a can of bed liner spray at pep boys. Buy an Alkaline pod and try fresh new batteries. If the problem happens again send it in.

Not a great deal... but enough to notice. I never head that problem with either my horseshoe coil or 1000 excal. Perhaps there is something that needs adjusting. But I never felt it to be enough of a problem to really bother me.

The loud pop when you turn it on.... the same with all three of my excals.. just leave the headphones off when you turn the machine on.

Cannot help with other issue.

Lookie here who I found! This is BILL from Minelab in Vegas, you know...THE ONLY GUY you want working on your Excal, IF you have to send it into Vegas, or as it were Chicago now. ANYWAY, I inquired and he said bring it on, as you can see! This is GOOD news AND another source for ikelite installation! WOW, I'm PUMPED!

Your threshold problem definitely sounds like weak batteries. It could be that the pack is getting old and won't hold a charge very long. There are places that sell replacement packs for the Excalibur for under $40. I would post link but can't on this forum.

The loud pop when you first turn the machine on is normal for the very early models.

The sweeping sound every few minutes could be a false signal. If you are hunting in salt water or wet salt sand these can occur when a wave passes over the coil. I've also experienced them when raising the coil off the bottom at the end of the swing. Either live with it or lower your sensitivity setting.

Minelab no longer repairs the old original Excaliburs but there is a former Minelab employee doing repairs. Maybe someone else has his contact information.

My opinion is the batteries are weak or has a dud cell, the sweeping sound is probably the battery alarm, and the uncontrolable threshold too. Under normal conditions when the battery gets down to about 10v the battery alarm starts to sound if ignored the threshold will rise and at first you can control it, within minutes it gets loud and you are unable to adjust it. then it will just die on you.

If you have a dud cell in the battery you will be close to the battery alarm from the outset but it will last a long time as the other cells are holding up, untill you get to the point they can't then the threshold goes haywire.
If you can try another fully charged battery of a fellow hunter and see what happens, you can get a repack from "onlybatteriesareus" (google it) the charger they have is pretty good too.

the poping on turn on/off is the same on mine

Some times in cold weather it takes about half an hour for my threshold to settle(the adjustments are only very slight) i put it down the the components warming up as it only seems to happen on real cold days
