Excalibur II straight shaft question

Anyone tried the pluggers 3 piece balanced straight shaft found on ebay fro $105 plus shipping? I just bought a Minelab Excalibur II and now looking for a straight shaft. Just wondering if the separate pieces will wiggle or have any play when you move the head under the water? Also does it sometimes lock up or find hard to dismantle when sand gets around the joints or push buttons? Looking to hear back from anyone who owns this 3 piece model. I want something that I can break apart and store away when not in use and this shaft looks great. Even a 2 piece straight shaft would work good too if someone else makes them. I am worried about how solid are the joints when attached and do not like the feeling of something wiggling when swinging side to side. Any input would help.

Thanks..

I had the three piece shaft from Plugger and it is very solid when put together. I had it on my old Excal 800. I was able to break it down and fit in my carry on luggage. Really nice.

It is very solid and well designed. He now includes the coil shaft clamp which really makes for a solid feel. No wiggling or anything. Feels like a solid one piece shaft. I highly recommend it.

I use one on my Excal II and highly recommend it as well. It's much better made and balanced than another brand straight shaft that I received when I purchased my unit a few years back.

Thanks guys for your input. I am also wondering if you find it difficult to make adjustments to the knobs since it is now located at the rear of the shaft versus below your forearm? I also see that he has a 2 piece straight which looks nice as well.

It is actually easier to adjust any settings with the pods behind the elbow. I had a shaft that had the pods underneath the forearm and it was a PITA to adjust the knobs as you had to twist your arm to get at the knobs. I will also say that putting the control and battery pods behind the elbow makes for a more balanced swing. It makes it almost effortless as the pods counter balance the coil. The three piece is better if you travel. Makes for a very compact system. Either way, the Plugger shafts are some of the best available.

Plugger's shaft made moving the settings and turning from pin point to discriminate easier. I would suggest though making the Mel Parker / OldBeechnut remote pin point discriminate switch modification. It really makes the Excalibur a lot easier and more enjoyable to use.

Thanks for the info Finderskeeper. If you don't mind me asking...What is the Mel Parker / OldBeechnut remote pin point discriminate switch modification? I am kind of leaning towards the 2 piece now from plugger.

Check this link .........

excalibur remote switch link

It will give you a lot of information on how to do the remote pin point / discrimination switch to your handle on the straight shaft.

I have found that to be one of the best modifications other than a straight shaft that can be done to an Excalibur.

i have the 3 piece shaft and i love it ..just flip the excal up side down all u really need to adjust is the pp switch

My 2 piece shaft arrived from ebay seller rods_by_plugger and this it is very neatly put together and well made. I requested for all s/s snap buttons for the control and battery pod instead of the nylon bolts. It looks perfect and he also made mines to 39" in length after I told him I was 5'8" tall. The new shaft locks makes the shaft pieces lock together with no wiggling of the joints found anywhere.

I found this 2 piece 39" shaft when fully attached a little too long to fit into the large trunk of my car. I then discovered that it very easy to just disconnect in half (while still leaving the coil wires nicely tied) by twisting in the opposite direction of the wound wire after pressing in the release snap button. You don't have to worry about making your wires all nicely wound again as you are just disconnecting the joining piece while leaving the coiled wires still wrapped around the shaft. You can also store the Excalibur (fully assembled) split in half in the Minelab carry bag if wanted when not in use.

I positioned my control pod with the PIN/DIS button facing towards my elbow to make it easier to switch with my left hand when needed. This 2 piece rod is very well balanced and easy to swing without getting a work out like the original Excalibur bent shaft. I used 2 sided 1" velcro to tie down my curly wires around the shaft. These velcro strips are very easy to remove compared to the plastic tie straps.

Overall, I really am very happy with my purchase and glad I got the 2 piece model. Now, all I gotta do is find some GOLD.
