Excalibur General Questions

Dear Forum,

I have an Excalibur 800 and have used it for many years. I wanted your input on whether I should try to "Upgrade" it for better depth by adding the 10" coil (would become an Excalibur 1000) and adding Grey Ghost Headphones.

How would this "upgraded" detector match up to the Excalibur II (mostly for wet sand hunting and shallow water).

Thanks,

Surfline

With the 10 you will add a few inch's. On the headphones, better then the UWGG I would change to Gold-Masters or gut the ones you have now and use Pel-tor 105's. Many complain about the low audio of the UWGG, which can be fixed by removing the flow coil in the earcup. My opinion, it would be better then a new excal.

Depth isnt always what its cracked up to be. What i mean by that is your coil might do just as well on some of those small gold targets the 10 inch guys walk over because of sensitivity. You will cover more ground with the 10, but it is heavier and more drag out there, more so in shallow than deep water. I find it sometime an advantage NOT to cover a lot of area and concentrate on a good grid if the area is hit hard by other hunters. Id change the headphones reguardless. Swap with someone who has a 10 inch first. The added drag isnt anything you can get away from like hip mounting something.

I have the 10" coil on my excal, my hunting partner has the 8" on his. There are times when he finds more than I do and there are times when I find more than he does but in the jewelry department I have found a little more than he has. He swings alot more than I do in the water to cover the same area I do. He used to have the 10" on his machine but developed a leak on his coil, he sent it to Minelab and decided to go with the 8" instead. Last I talked to him he said he'd rather have the 10" since he was swinging so much. The 8" coil is actually more like an 7 1/2", the 10" is a 10", you are losing 2 1/2"s on the coil. But there are areas where the 8" will be the bettert coil, especially in rocky and trashy areas. Hope this helps. HH

iv had every Excal ever made and they were all good...my last 3 were Excal 2's ...2 with 10 coil and now my last one is a 8" coil. i can say i like the 8" better..i see little or no diff in depth.you do have better coverage with the bigger coils but i dig nickles @ 15" with my 8" and thats deep enough for me.and the weight is much less and resistance in water is way less. i have no problem with the stock head phones after i seal all the vent holes with silicone seal to keep the wind noise out.
