Excalibur Coil Questions--is a loose cover normal, and

larryw

New member
I just purchased an excalibur on eBay. It like new and appears to be in excellent condition, but I notice that the coil cover is fairly loose and I'm afraid that it might fall off from wave action when detecting in the surf. Is this normal for the cover to be so loose, and if not, is there an acceptable way to "tighten" it? Also, I promptly stripped the plastic bolt when I tightened the coil wing nut (I hardly put much pressure on it at all!). If it happened to me, I'm sure it happened to others! Must you go to a dealer to purchase these plastic bolts, or can they be purchased, at perhaps a hardware store? Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! ~Larry~

You will have to carefully drill out the existing hole to allow for the large nut. Then you are good to go. Excellent circuitry on the machine, it's just the rest of the machine that needs jury rigging.
You'll like the machine once you get it right.

Some coil covers fit loose for some reason.....
Oversize cover/undersize coil?

The one on my GT was loose as heck and would come off way too easy. Sealed it on with a bead of silicone rubber.

Try the larger hardware stores for bolts. 1/4 " nylon. If you can't find any, the dealers can get them for you. Your "old" one may have been partly stripped already. Have to be careful with them.

If you go to a dealer for new bolts, you might want to get some spare rubber teardrop washers for the coil . They get wore out or compressed and make it hard to keep the coil in position without overtightening the bolt.

I drilled out my hole to 5/16 diameter, then hit Home Depot or Lowes or Tru Value and get some 2 inch 5/16 bolts, Nylon, get nuts and washers Nylon also. Take bolt, add washer, shove it threw coil and mount, then washer and 2 nuts, that way the threads wont strip so easy. Did it to mine and my sons I just got off e-bay also. Did you get a stright shaft yet????????????????

Actually what works well is if you make yourself a little nylon spacer with a couple of nylon washers, Minelab used to use some spacers years ago on some of their coils, made it a lot easier to tighten up against the washer and spacer....Geo

I lost a coil cover once. I now keep the new cover on with a couple of nylon zip ties. Just change them out when they wear thin. The nylon bolts you get at the hardware store will eventually break so keep a spare in your car. - John

Glad you thought of this..

Being a little more isolated (the nearest HD is 850 miles away by plane or boat) requires one to be a little more creative in their solutions. In all fairness, I heard about this solution on the forum a while ago (I think from normdiver) but a creative solution is only a solution if you use it.

Bon Chance,
