Excalibur and cell phone?

First of all I'm glad to see there is a site like this.:clapping: I'm new to metal detecting (Have not even bought one yet) and this forum has really helped me make the right decision on what to buy. That being said I pretty much have my mind set on a new Excalibur II. The only issue that I can see is that my Blackberry is a permanent fixture in my pocket. I am slightly worried that the phone and the Excalibur might not be the best of friends?:starwars: Is interference from a digital cell signal a big problem? And if so is there any way to correct it or at least reduce it? Thanks for any help. John.

My cell will interfere with my Sov when the phone updates every so often. Has a strange sound that does not resemble targets. You could get used to it and just ignore it.

I detect to get away from the worries of the world and life.

Why would anyone want to carry a cell phone with them while doing what is one of the best ways to relax and have fun.

I have an F-70 along with the Excalibur and E-Trac and each has issues with cell phone signals. That's OK....I don't want the darned thing ringing while I'm out enjoying the day.

I have to laugh at all the people walking around, driving and running with cell phones stuck on their heads. What is it that is so important that it can't wait to be said?

Best to just keep the cell phone in the car and have it take a message. Nothing is that important that it cannot wait.

Except for metal detecting.

Thanks for the replies! I was hoping the phone wouldn't cause much of a problem, but I guess I may just have to live with it. My business involves taking calls and emails just about every waking moment, it used to bother me, but missed calls mean missed opportunities (And money!) So now I only turn the phone off when I'm sleeping, bow hunting or entertaining the ladies :cheekkiss: (Which unfortunately is not very often ) It's really not an inconvenience at all. With caller ID you can easily screen your calls. When I'm busy or relaxing only the important ones get answered. Thanks again.

Do you plan on using it for it's intended purpose, water hunting? If so, how do you plan on using a blackberry while water hunting? If you are out hunting you probably won't hear a cell phone ring anyway with the headphones on, so why not leave the phone in the car and check it on your breaks. I know multi-tasking is important in today's world, however that can only go so far.

I am a bow hunter also. I make sure mine is off when on the hunt. Wonder why metal detecting doesn't hold the same level of importance of relaxation as does bow hunting? I leave the cell phone on and, when detecting, as far away from the control box as possible and I put it on vibrate only. It doesn't seem to interfere with the E-Trac or the Ace 250. It's my choice to have a means of contact with my family. I could set it to only accept the ring tone specific to my family. I think the GPS tracking function and an the ability to summons help if needed is worth it. Had some kids in a park swinging their Num-Chukas or whatever the hell they are, and as soon as they saw me on the cell, they split.

The Excal is waterproof, I don't think a Blackberry is.... HH Joe

Leave the phone in the car!! I know it's your business phone, but any good client will leave a message. I hunt with a guy that keeps his phone with him and he spends more time yakking than hunting and then can't figure out why I skunk him so bad every time. It's a hobby and time that should be spent enjoying yourself!! You gotta seperate your business and private life or you'll end up in an early grave!! If you can turn it off while bowhunting then you can turn it off while detectin'!! Get out and have a ball!!

"I'm in a hurry to get things done,
I rush and rush till life's no fun!!
All I really gotta do is live and die,
I'm in a hurry and don't know why!!"

especially in wooded or deep woods area. I have a palm treo (smart Phone) I can turn off the phone but keep features active; my phone camera to take photos of my finds at the hole. I have no problems. when done detecting I just activate the phone again. Hey I run across some weird people out in the woods or what if u fall in a bad location and u have no hunting buddy? I always go with safety 1st! Do what I do take the phone with you just deactivate the phone side and you can use the features still with the phone, like the camera or memo for taking field notes. Whatever u do smart detecting is the way to go.

i have an Excalibur 11 and love it
as to my iphone in my pocket i cant answer it while I'm detecting anyhow, that's what the voice mail is for...
and I'm a newbie too...

Again thank you for all the replies. I'll obviously be leaving the phone in the truck while hunting deep water, but I often carry it while in waders so it'll probably be OK while detecting shallow water. I do understand that metal detecting is supposed to be relaxing, but without the phone I'd have even less time available for my hobbies. If it's relaxing but tethered to my phone or stuck behind the desk I'll choose the phone every time.

IM SO GLADTHAT MOST OF YOUR REPLYS SAY , (LEAVE IT)
I THINK MOST PEOPLE DETECT TO RELAX.
I HAVE TO HAVE AN EXCAPE FROM ALL LIFES TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS.
IF I NEED TIME TO DO THIS I CANT HAVE MY PHONE RINGING.
EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT, BUT IT IS GOOD TO HERE THERE IS PEOPLE
WHO THINK THE SAME WAY AS I DO.
YOUR CHOICE OF DETECTORS IS A GOOD ONE.
LOVE MINE WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANY OTHER.
I THINK ONCE YOU GET ONE, AND START USEING IT YOUR CHOICE OF WEATHER OR NOT TO TAKE PHONE
WILL CHANGE.

I lived about 40 years before I got a cell phone, but only about 25 before I got a metal detector. Since I got the metal detector first, it has seniority.
