Excalibur Advise

New member
Hello everyone, new member here. I have one of the old Excaliburs with the sword on the side and the seasearch coil and black headphones. I haven't used it in so long I'm ashamed to say. When I got it out a while back the nicads had gone bad and the resulting pressure cracked the holder all over. It is still in one piece, but lots of cracks. I'm told the newer battery packs will not fit the old machines. Anyway I want to get one of the straight rods for it, and get it working again. Maybe do something to protect the bottom of the coil as I have read that beaches can be rough on them. When I did use it, it was always on land. So, any suggestions or advise you guys will give will be most helpful. I have ordered the book from Clivesgoldpagehome. I live in Georgia and plan to use it mainly on the south east beaches and maybe some on land. BTY I'm pretty handy with tools and soldering. Worked in electronics for years, if it makes any difference.

I have an old Excal like yours and the new battery packs will fit.
All you need to do is trim back the lugs on the control pod to fit it, that's all I did.
HH and cheers

Soo true..

My hunting partner just bought the Akaline battery pack.. NOT The Excal II one.... Because that one is $20.00 More.. Why.. Who know's there's no difference between them..

I fitted his with a Straight shaft and 15"WOT coil.. and it's one Bad AZZ Machine..

I believe the Excal batteries were/are NiCd, the Excal 2 batteries are NiMH maybe not much of a difference, but a few benefits over NiCd. Too bad they couldn't have gone with the Li-Ion...

I guess I should've mentioned.. That he Bought the Battery Pod "Shell" and installed his 1400 Battery into it..

As far as protecting the coil; you can mask off aroune the outside edge with tape and apply
Marine Epoxy to the bottom surface ( make sure coil is level first and fixed in such a way that
it will stay that way untill the Epoxy cures ) and then spray a coat of Dupli-Color truck bed Coating
( sold in most auto parts stores ) this will dry in less than 10 min.s and serves to (1) make the coil
look like it was made that way, ane (2) it gives you a wear off layer that you can keep track of every
time you use the machine and tell when to recoat befor it wear's into the Epoxy or into the coil it''s
self. apply the Epoxy about an 1/8 inch thick and try to make it smooth ( don't over work it, it will flow
out some on it's own. ) Takes the place of a skid plate and works better!

Bad thing with coil covers are that you have to remove them after every session and clean out the sand and water or your detector will false. I don't use one anymore, but have to be extremely careful with my swing. I wouldn't recommend it. I did notice something one day removing my old coil cover that i siliconed to my coil. When i was cutting it off, i could have just siliconed the cover to my coil, then when dry cut the edges off and it would be good to go. I was getting falsing because i didn't silicon the top very well and sand and water was always between the coil and cover. So if i eliminated the lip and just used the bottom sealed tight then presto protection. I'm kinda nervous about putting all that epoxy on the bottom of the coil that's why i haven't gone that way.

For coil protection I simply siliconed 4mm clear perpex to the bottom of my coil.
Before adhering the perpex I actually cut it to suit the shape of the old horse-shoe shape of the old Excal coil
then put it on.Completly cover the coil with silicone to stop falsing.
No worries about crud getting in between coil and coil protector any more.
Works a treat.

Hey guys I appreciate all the advise, especially about the battery pack. Really, thank you very much. On the coil cover issue, I had read here on the forum about the epoxy treatment, but there seemed to be some discussion as to which is best. I had also thought about just using epoxy or silicone and attaching a 1/8 inch piece of plexiglass cut to fit the shape of the coil. And which of the straight rods do you like best?
