Excalibur 800 vs 1000 advice needed

I recently bought the 1000, and I love the coverage and depth and it wasn't hard to pin point with after about a day of practice. I am glad I got the 1000 but I am sure you will be happy with either. Make sure and watch your overlap with either, but especially the 800. HH Joe

I would recommend the 1000 for the coverage and depth. The 800 goes deep but the 1000 will get you several more inches and allow you to cover more ground in less time. There would be less resistence in the water from the 800, but the depth and coverage of the 1000 would make up for the fact that you might have to swing at a slower rate. Might even improve you number of finds.

I own and use a 1000 and 2) 800s. There is a time and place for each. Buy the 1000 initially, and when you can save up enough, then get the 800. They BOTH find loot, NO QUESTION!
They both have strong advantages and disadvantages over the other, I own both, let me explain. I love each of them too, but Huntress uses the 800 when she hunts, as it is lighter for her.
1000
Strengths
1. Covers better and does not require as much overlapping of the swing
2. May be a hair deeper seeking, but hard to tell.
Weaknesses
1. Must be swept slower to allow good signal penetration, without overrunning targets or causing the sensitivity to need to be backed off due to too fast of a sweep.
2. Harder to control in deeper water and wave action, current.
3. Since the coil is larger, a good target could be masked, while in close proximity to iron, especially if sweeping too fast.
800
Strengths
1. Easily controlled in deeper water, current and wave action.
2. Target separation is ABSOLUTELY superior. It will pick a 1000 apart in a trashy area. It can sniff gold out of a nail infested area better than any I've seen.
3. It can be swung faster than the 1000, without losing good penetration.
4. It can be run hotter on sensitivity than the 1000, without pushing the unit into a strained mode of operation, because it is not reading as much ground.

1. It does not cover as well and needs to have more overlapping of coil swings, to ensure good coverage of the area.
As you can see, I like the 800 better in many ways, but I sweep very slow, so the 1000 works better for me, as I like the ability to cover more ground. In trashy areas though, the 800 will rule the conditions there, from my experience.

I bought the Excalibur 800 years ago and when it was time for a newer coil I had them put the larger 10 inch coil on my machine. After going out with the 10 inch coil a few times I sent it back in and had them put another 8 inch coil back on it. It just feels better and gets in between the trash better.

Nothing better than either of the fitted with a 15" WOT coil. That is for covering ground in swimming area for recently lost items.
I have an original Excalibur (Pre 800/1000 models) and a 1000. Both are fitted with water proof connectors and I can interchange the original horse shoe coil, the 8", 10" and 15" coils with either of the Excaliburs. Needles to say but, each coil has its own prowess.
NOTE: I understand that the Excalibur II will not function with the WOT coil.

I've been a certified diver since 1980 but I've never used a detector. I found a solid 14k gold wedding ring in st Thomas, about 12g! Finding it with no detector got me bit with the bug. Thank you you for your help in replying Gulf Hunter, it answers exactly what I wanted to know. Also is fresh water going to factor in the use like other detectors? I'll do, 70% of underwater in fresh water

Lucky you caught me, as I was just lurking. The Excal works great in fresh water and I've had some great hunts there too, no worries. The 800 is no longer produced, but you MAY still be able to find one somewhere, or used in good shape. The 800 is MANDATORY in fresh, as there is little to any degradation of ferrous iron and the 1000 will mask too much. Best of luck to ya mate.
