Excalibur 800 Check Up Questions...

Sealed some cracks in my friend's 800 Excalibur 8" BBS coil, covered it with about 7 or 8 coats of spray on Rustoleum bed liner, tightened down the slipping dials, and did a few other tune ups to it. Maybe somebody can help me with some information on it. I unscrewed the connector where it plugs into the battery and cleaned up all that and then put some dialectric (sp?) grease on the threads/gasket/and battery plug contacts to help keep it sealed and also to prevent any carbon build up on the battery leads.

There is a little rubber gasket that seats down over the contacts. I removed this and cleaned it up/greased it on both sides to keep the rubber from drying out and for a better seal. Diaelectric grease won't break down rubber and is meant for things like spark plug boots to keep things from getting brittle or building up carbon. Anyway, this seal looks like it's seen better days in that the little dimples where the connectors poke through are flattened on one side. I told my friend I wouldn't trust it anymore. Does anybody know how much these seals costs and where you can get one? Also, is this the only place this connector seals or is the top of the screw on battery connector supposed to have a rubber gasket or boot of some sort there as well? It seems like the screw on connector's side where the cable comes in would not be waterproof but I'm not sure.

I also used a wrench to make sure all the other cable connectors were tight and found the headphone one a bit loose. Fixed the loose dials by popping the caps and tightening down the nuts on top. His coil was cracked at the seams in various spots since he doesn't use a coil cover so I plugged those with Shoe Goo and then gave the coil about 8 coats of Rustoleum spray on bed liner to prevent future wear and make sure things were sealed well.

Any other areas to inspect on these Excal 800's to make sure she doesn't leak or break on him in the field? Also curious about any straight shafts with grips for these things as it's pretty awkward with the "S" shaped rod and the heavy control box all the way down the shaft like that. Seems mounted behind your elbow would really take a lot of stress off your arm.
 
imho on the dyelectric grease..i use tube lube its much better at sealing than the grease...as for the rubber gasket, im sure you can get them from min lab or ike liite makers of that connector,but you could also just make a rubber gasket yourself....then fill connector with tube lube and itll be ok,this is what i use on my excalibur2 1000 since i get into salt water allot...

I also use diaelectric lube on my o rings and seals, works great. I have my Excal 2 1000 hipmounted and seems to work pretty good, don't like the S shaped rod very much though. I did order some aluminum tubing from aircraftspruce.com to make a straight shaft. I ordered the .745 ID, 4' long and it cost me $18 and changed shipped to my house, should get it this week. Got this info on the tubing from Erikk here on the forums, think maybe the Excal will swing alot better with the controls mounted on the backside of my arm instead of on the bottom, a little to heavy the stock way. HH
 
i also hip mount my Excalibur but i still use the Anderson straight shaft.seems to be light enough for me,Ive not had any problems with mine..

Thanks for the info from both you guys. I'll try to talk him into going with an aftermarket shaft or at least letting me make one for him.
 
Whatever works.... I may go to Aluminium later as we all know it is lighter... But for now, the ss works well.

I too use dielectric. Have been for years and I have never had any problems with it.
