excalibur 2 goes haywire

Android

New member
My buddy called and he said his new excal runs nice on land but as soon as the coil touches water, the threshold goes haywire. take it out of the water it seems fine. He is in fresh water. He has tried adjusting sensitivity to auto and way down in manual. He said that it seems to stabilize when he cranks the disc to max. It is haywire in disc or all metal. He is positive that he is not near large amounts of metal or electrical interference.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I did not need to see this post right now.:rage:..... or......maybe I did......

What's going on with these things?
I'm supposed to be in the process of buying one and to be honest, i'm scared that I might be making a mistake.

Should I be concerned?

Mine does the same thing in the dive mode. I just turned the threshold down to where wasn't audible. The signals come through loud and clear and it's very deep. I have done this in manual sensitivity or auto. Dick Schutz says they need to see it in Vegas. I told him he will have to wait till the weather cools off. It works just fine in silent search.

Tell him to send it back! It's not right

And I am sure that it goes crazy in auto correct? Sound like the three I got and sent back. Not sure what is going on with them, if it's in the coil or what. I would guess it's something with the new slim line coil.

Maybe they should think about putting the old coil on all the new ex cal's

It's too bad that the new ex cal. is ruining the name because they are a great machine when you get one that works...

My new machine is supposed to come directly from Minelab. I want to believe that they will take the necessary steps to assure that I will receive a good one. This will be my fourth, new Minelab and I can say that I have never had a problem with the first three. They were all Sovereigns though. This will be my first Excalibur.

I told my buddy that it was a long shot but try removing the coil cover. Sometimes I have heard minelabs have issues with sand inside the coil cover. Eventhough the excal is brand new. He took it off and said it improved slightly.

I can understand that a slight adjustment in sensitivity or discrimination might have to be made when making the transition from wet sand to salt water but I wouldn't think that it would have to be a major adjustment. I've never really had much of a problem doing it with a Sovereign. On the other hand, I wasn't using the GT which is more sensitive.

I have been reading about the problems Excal II owners have been having. I am in NO way saying that they have not had real problems, or claim to be an expert. I do however think some of the problems have been settings. I have used my Excal II with 10in coil now for about 6 weeks. I have tried several different settings, and I have been able to duplicate the erratic operations other owners have been having. If I run my sensitivity above 5 1/2, or call it between 12 and 1 as on a clock, it will get erratic. It will sound off if I hit my foot, or scrub the ground. I run my setting at 5, sometimes 5 1/2 if conditions will let me. (your area may let you go even higher on sensitivity) Water depth will also come into play. Also noticed that I have to keep the coil clean from sand in the cover, more so than with the my Excal 1000, One thing you must remember, keep your swing speed slow. It will false and become unstable if you swing to fast. Set your threshold to a very faint buzz, then turn it down just a touch more. If the threshold comes back, you might need to bump it down a bit more. Set Disc. to 1. It will sound off on a good target. All the settings I just mentioned, have been posted by others several times. I have had very good luck with my new Excal II. I do believe it is a little deeper than my 2 year old Excal.
Give her a chance, play with the settings. I would also recommend you read Advance Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Excal. by Clive James Clynick. I have read it several times, and find it a great read.

Thanks for the confidence building post Bigfoot. I'm not letting all the scary stories keep me from getting the machine that I have been wanting for years. Can't wait to get it and give it a workout.:detecting:

I know I sold a couple and these went to experienced Excalibur users and they just love them. Some of the things we read on this forum with the Sovereigns and the Excalibur's are from those that are new to these detectors and don't realize these do work different then what they are used to and there are some too that may have a problem also and hard to tell the difference. This is where it is nice to have another BBS user that is close by try it and see which it is.

well iv had 5 Sovereign's and 3 Excal's and never had a problem with any so far..hope this holds true as i just ordered a new Excal ll yesterday!

YOu got it right Bigfoot. Keep that sens adjusted correctly and it will perform excellent.

All right Bling!! Welcome to the Excalibur II club.

I guess I will have to go try my Buddies new excal and see. I have owned a sovereign for years. What he describes doesn't sound right. I understand that if the sense is too hight it can act erratic but it should not do this in auto sensitivity. Plus people have had coil problems that minelab has fixed.

Sounds like you have not owned the ex2 with the redesigned coil. These are the models that people are reporting problems.
