I just bought a minelab Excaliber. Is there any good tips on its functions....What to do or not to do with it? It is used and should I get all new o-rings for it before using? I have never used a underwater detector before...I do own a Expl. XS...are they any way shape or form similar? I truely love the Minelab Explorer XS....I hope the Excaliber is just as good! Nervous In NH!!

No need to replace o-rings. That would require sending the unit to Minelab. They told me that if it ain't broke don't fix it. The best advice I can give you is not to hip mount it. Hip mounting will cause the coil cable to fail eventually. If you want a more comfortable setup, get a straight shaft that mounts the control housing behind the arm cup. I just got a really nice one from a guy in my club. He sells them on eBay. Do a search for "excalibur straight shaft" ~John

I have no specific questions...just looking for any input on how it handles and functions as far as any cliques or any problems or tips...maybe I should just wait to recieve it and ask later.....thanks anyways

Thanks ..that is my motto also..If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Once you start using it, you may begin to have a few questions, such as sensitivity/depth on discriminate vs. pinpoint mode, level of discrimination, etc. I think it is always good to experiment with pulltabs, coins, jewelry, etc. to understand what your machine is capable of. You may even want to bury objects in the sand and test your detector's capabilities.
Surfline.

I will need to carry a garbage bag if I dig all that breaks the threshold...

several years ago. I replaced all the knobs with REAL ones. The ones that came with it had a fake screw thing that didn't actually do anything. The knobs turned and turned and turned, like a merry go round. The joker was the shafts they were on....didn't.
I went to Radio Shack and for a couple of bucks, I replaced all the knobs with ones that had set screws in the sides (like real ones have). Then I used a Dremel tool to grind flat spots on each knob shaft. After that was done, the thing would actually go to where you set it, you didn't have to disconnect the battery to shut the stupid thing off.
OH, they put me through hell with their cheap knobs and earphones!!! Earphones....AAARRGH, wash off your head every time you submerged This winter I cut the old ones off and put on some Gray Ghost underwater phones. Need to bathtub test it before going hunting.
I hear that they have FINALLY made some improvements, AFTER many thousands of complaints!!
But, give the devil his due, it is one of, if not the best, water machine out there (once you fix all their screw ups).
Minelab could dominate the entire industry if they would repackage the Excal into a realistic shaped assembly. What is it with that ridiculous tube affair anyway????? Some sort of phallic symbol??????
As far as settings go, thats what tonal ID is all about. You can run on 0 or 1, and get everything. I usually run zero when I hunt Miamis beaches, just too many iron pieces in the waters. I don't care to dig iron.
I want gold and silver.
There, I'm done ranting for today.
